12-Year-Old Boy Takes Control of Runaway Car After Mom Passes Out at 60 MPH — Now He’s Being Honored for His Courage

A terrifying drive turned into a life-threatening emergency when 12-year-old Zac Howells realized his mother had suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel of their moving car. Traveling at approximately 60 mph on a highway in England, Zac faced a situation no child should ever have to experience. With the vehicle accelerating and his mother unresponsive, he had seconds to react — and his quick thinking helped save both their lives.

The incident happened on December 14, 2025, as Zac and his mother, Nicola Crump, were traveling toward Wellesbourne Market. Nicola began feeling unwell after they had been on the road for about 30 minutes and told her son she needed to pull over. But before she could safely stop, she passed out, and her leg remained on the accelerator, causing the car to move forward. When Nicola regained consciousness, she was disoriented and feared they had crashed. Zac reassured her that they were safe, even as the frightening experience was still unfolding.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Zac admitted that his first reaction was panic and fear. He began screaming when he realized his mother was unconscious, but quickly managed to regain his composure. He took control of the steering wheel and guided the vehicle into the central reservation, bringing it to a stop. Once the car had stopped, he called 999, the United Kingdom’s emergency number, and used the car’s GPS to help emergency responders determine their location.

When paramedics arrived, they examined Nicola and discovered that her blood pressure was extremely low. Although she received medical attention, the exact reason she lost consciousness remained unclear months later. Nicola said she was awaiting a cardiology appointment to investigate what had happened. Looking back, she recalled how Zac’s hand was trembling when she came around — a sign of how deeply the frightening experience had affected him, even though he had managed to act decisively in the moment.

Zac’s actions have since earned him widespread recognition. Now 13, he has received the Child of Courage award at the 2026 Pride of Britain Awards. The young teenager was surprised with the news by soccer star Jude Bellingham, who revealed the honor during what Zac believed was a special documentary-related experience. His mother was overcome with emotion when she learned her son would be recognized for his bravery. Despite the attention, Zac remains a typical teenager who enjoys spending time with friends and pursuing his interests.

For Nicola, the experience has also become a reminder of how important it is for families to discuss emergencies before they happen. She hopes other parents will talk with their children about how to seek help if an adult suddenly becomes unwell while driving. Zac’s experience was frightening and unexpected, but his ability to respond under pressure made a critical difference that day. His story is now being shared not only as an example of extraordinary courage, but also as a reminder that knowing how to call for help in an emergency can matter when every second counts.
