28 YEARS LATER, POLICE SAY THEY FOUND THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR A YOUNG MOTHER’S DEATH

For 28 years, one question haunted a Georgia family:

Who killed Christy Dawn Myers?

In 1998, Christy Dawn Myers, a 20-year-old mother, left home for a store in rural south Georgia and was found stabbed to death beside her car. Twenty-eight years later, the GBI has

She was only 20 years old — a young mother with her entire life still ahead of her.

On September 15, 1998, Myers was found near her car along the Broxton-Fitzgerald Highway in Coffee County, Georgia. She had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Then came decades of silence.

No arrest.

No courtroom.

No answers.

Just a family left waiting.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Myers had reportedly been seen at a local store shortly before her death. Witnesses said she left alone.

A neighbor later discovered her near the scene after reportedly hearing a conversation followed by the sound of a vehicle accelerating.

But whoever was responsible remained unidentified.

For years, the case became a cold case.

Then, nearly three decades later, investigators reopened the past.

COLD CASE: Suspect arrested nearly 30 years after Georgia mother's brutal murder

Through continued forensic testing and investigative work, authorities say they identified James Lawrence III, now 47, as a suspect.

On October 1, 2026, Lawrence was arrested and charged with felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Suddenly, a case that had gone silent for almost 30 years was moving again.

But perhaps the most emotional part of the story came from Myers’ daughter, Chelsea Wolfe.

She wants people to remember her mother as more than a name in an old case file.

“I don’t want my mom to be remembered as just a victim,” Wolfe said, according to CBS News. She described Myers as resilient and a fighter — someone who deserved the chance to live her life and watch her family grow.

That is what makes cold cases so haunting.

Time can pass.

Evidence can grow old.

Memories can fade.

But for the families left behind, the questions never disappear.

Now, after 28 years, investigators say they may finally have the person responsible for Christy Dawn Myers’ death.

The case, however, is far from over.

Lawrence faces multiple charges, and it was not immediately clear whether he had entered a plea or retained an attorney. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

For Myers’ family, the arrest cannot bring her back.

But after nearly three decades of waiting, it may finally bring them one thing they have been missing since 1998:

Answers.

Twenty-eight years. One young mother. And a mystery that refused to disappear.
