Trapped in a Rain Soaked Storm Drain, a Tiny Hedgehog Finds Two Gentle Hands

On a rainy autumn morning, a wildlife rescuer found a small hedgehog trapped inside a roadside storm drain in a quiet park. The animal was wet, cold, and hidden among fallen leaves, unable to climb out of the smooth concrete channel on its own.

The rescue was captured on a chest mounted bodycam. The footage shows the rescuer crouching beside the open drain, gently supporting the hedgehog with one gloved hand while the animal blinks and moves its nose in the rain. With great care, the rescuer brings a second hand underneath the hedgehog, lifts it clear of the drain, and places it onto a soft towel inside an open carrier waiting on the roadside.

“He was so small, and so still,” the rescuer said. “He was not struggling. He was just waiting for someone to notice him. The most important thing was to move slowly and keep my hands steady.”

Once safe, the hedgehog was taken for a check, dried, warmed, and given food and rest. Wildlife carers said the animal had no serious injuries and recovered well after its ordeal.

Later that evening, the hedgehog was released in a sheltered part of the park, away from the road. It walked into the leaves on its own, a quiet ending to a rescue that began with one person stopping to look down.

Rescuers remind the public to check storm drains and roadside grates after heavy rain, and to contact a local wildlife rescue service rather than handling a wild animal without guidance.
