A Young Coati, Stranded On A Slippery Log In Rising Floodwater, Finds Safety In A Soft Basket

In a flooded rainforest in Costa Rica, a young coati was found standing on a fallen log as brown water rose around it. The small animal, with its long pointed snout, dark eye markings, and distinctive ringed tail, kept its balance on the wet wood while leaves and debris drifted past in the current.
A rescuer wearing black waterproof gloves approached slowly and held out a hand toward the frightened animal. Rather than grabbing the coati, the rescuer waited, giving it time to sniff the glove and grow calm. A wicker basket lined with a soft cream blanket was then placed beside the log to offer a safe and stable place to step onto.
The coati stepped carefully into the basket, its tail following naturally behind it. Once inside, it settled onto the blanket while the rescuer steadied the basket and carried it away from the floodwater toward higher ground.
The rescue, captured in a 15 second bodycam video, shows a calm and patient approach that wildlife rescuers often use with frightened young animals. The short video ends with the coati safe inside the basket, a small moment of calm in the middle of a flooded forest.
No injuries were visible in the video, and the animal appeared calm once it was lifted clear of the water.
