British Mum, 42, Dies Suddenly on Lanzarote Holiday After Mistaking Symptoms for a Cold — Heartbroken Husband Pays Tribute

A British mother has died suddenly while on holiday in Lanzarote after initially believing she was suffering from a common cold. Rachel Weston, 42, from Bury, Greater Manchester, was spending time in the Spanish Canary Islands with her husband, Mark, and two friends when she became unwell. Despite initially appearing to improve, her condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly, ending in a tragedy that has left her family devastated.

Rachel had been staying in Puerto del Carmen when she began experiencing symptoms she believed were caused by a cold. She visited a local pharmacy to obtain medication and, for a time, appeared to feel better. However, when her symptoms returned and her health worsened, Rachel and her husband decided to cut their holiday short and arranged last-minute flights home for the following day.

Tragically, the couple never made it home together. On October 3, Rachel reportedly collapsed in their hotel room. Hotel staff and lifeguards attempted to help before emergency services arrived, but she could not be revived. Local reports stated that she suffered a cardiac arrest, although the underlying medical cause of her death has not been publicly confirmed.

Her husband, Mark, has since shared an emotional tribute to the woman he had loved for more than a decade. The couple had been together for 11 years and married in May 2024. Reflecting on the sudden loss, he described how his world had been turned upside down, remembering their relationship as one filled with love, laughter and companionship.

Rachel was also a devoted stepmother to Mark’s three children, Steven, 22, Charley, 19, and Mikey, 15. Mark said she had played an important role in helping him raise them and described her as the heart of their home. She worked as a carer at Regency Care Home, dedicating her professional life to supporting others. Away from work, she adored the couple’s two dogs, Maisie and Padmé.

The couple’s love story included a memorable marriage proposal at a Bowling for Soup concert. Mark reportedly contacted the band’s frontman, Jaret Reddick, before a December 2022 show in Torquay and was invited onto the stage to propose to Rachel during the performance of “Punk Rock 101.” They married on May 11, 2024, after sharing years of life together.

Now, Mark is facing the painful task of arranging his wife’s funeral while trying to keep family life steady for the children. He has launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and has asked those attending the service to wear purple, Rachel’s favourite colour. Her funeral is scheduled for November 6.

Rachel’s death has left loved ones mourning a woman remembered for her kindness, dedication to her family and commitment to caring for others. What began as a holiday with friends turned into an unimaginable loss, and her husband’s tribute reflects the profound impact she had on the people closest to her.
