Mother Faces Trial After 4-Year-Old Daughter Dies in Freezing Home While She Allegedly Slept Under Heated Blanket

A Pennsylvania judge has ruled that the case against Sarah Brubaker can move forward after testimony revealed disturbing conditions inside the family’s home, where investigators say a young girl became dangerously ill while living without adequate heat or food.

A Pennsylvania mother accused of neglecting her 4-year-old daughter before the child’s death will face the next stage of criminal proceedings after a judge ruled that the case can move forward. Sarah Brubaker, 36, is facing charges including third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the girl’s death in DuBois, Pennsylvania. During a preliminary hearing on October 30, 2026, the judge determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed. Brubaker is scheduled to return to court on November 18 for a formal arraignment.

The case dates back to December 20, 2025, when Brubaker reportedly found her daughter cold to the touch inside their home. According to the criminal complaint, Brubaker and the child’s father attempted to care for the girl before taking her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that the child died from pseudomembranous colitis, a serious condition involving inflammation of the colon that can cause severe, potentially life-threatening diarrhea. The medical examiner reportedly classified the death as a homicide caused by neglect.

During questioning, Brubaker allegedly told investigators that her daughter had not eaten for at least two weeks and had been experiencing diarrhea, weakness, and problems with her balance. Testimony at the recent hearing also shed light on the conditions inside the home. Officers described the residence as extremely cold, with one reportedly testifying that frost had formed on the windows. Investigators said the property’s natural gas heating system was not broken but had been shut off.

One detail highlighted during the proceedings was that Brubaker and the child’s father reportedly slept with heated blankets while the home’s main heating system remained off. The father later died from complications associated with hypothermia, according to reports. Earlier investigative reporting also described the home as having two working refrigerators that contained no food. Authorities said the family had been experiencing financial difficulties, although investigators reportedly identified potential financial resources that may have been available to them.

The latest ruling does not mean Brubaker has been convicted. It means the case has cleared the preliminary stage and will continue through the court process. The charges reflect allegations that prosecutors must still prove, and Brubaker is presumed innocent unless and until she is found guilty. As the proceedings continue, the circumstances surrounding the little girl’s final weeks — including her reported illness, the lack of heat in the home, and the decisions made by the adults responsible for her care — remain central to the case.
