IDF Says Final Hamas Member Involved in Shani Louk Abduction Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Nearly three years after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that shocked Israel and the world, the Israeli military says it has killed the final remaining member of the Hamas cell involved in the abduction of Shani Louk. The announcement marks a significant development in a case that became one of the most recognizable images of the October 7 assault, after photographs of the young woman’s body being transported through Gaza spread around the world.

Israel recovers bodies of three dead hostages, including Shani Louk

According to a joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel’s Shin Bet security agency, Tamer Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sabbagh was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia, northern Gaza, on Monday, October 19, 2026. Israeli authorities identified him as a member of Hamas’s military wing who crossed into Israeli territory during the October 7 attack and participated in the abduction of Louk. The military said he had also been involved in attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and efforts to restore Hamas’s military capabilities during the war.

Louk, 22, was a German-Israeli tattoo artist attending the Supernova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im when Hamas-led militants launched their assault on southern Israel. During the attack, she was seized and taken into Gaza. Images taken by Associated Press photographer Ali Mahmud showed her apparently unconscious body in the back of a pickup truck surrounded by armed men. The photographs became internationally known and turned her case into a symbol of the brutality of the October 7 attacks. Her family initially held out hope that she might still be alive, but Israeli authorities confirmed her death in late October 2023 after forensic testing identified a fragment of her skull.

Her remains were recovered by Israeli forces during an operation in Gaza in May 2024 and returned to her family for burial. For her relatives, the recovery brought an end to months of uncertainty, although the circumstances of her death and the events surrounding her abduction remained deeply painful. The photographs of her being transported through Gaza continued to draw international attention long after the initial attack.

The latest Israeli announcement also provided an update on the five-member Hamas cell identified by the military as being involved in the abduction. According to the IDF, three members had been killed earlier in the war, one had been captured by Israeli forces, and al-Sabbagh was the final member to be accounted for. The military said his recent activities posed an ongoing threat and described the strike as part of its efforts to prevent further attacks. These claims about his operational activities were made by Israeli security officials and have not been independently established in the reports.

The announcement brings a new development in the long aftermath of Shani Louk’s abduction, but it cannot undo the loss suffered by her family. Her story remains closely associated with the October 7 massacre, while the fate of the individuals involved continues to be part of the wider conflict and its ongoing security operations. The killing of the final identified member of the cell, as described by Israeli authorities, closes another chapter in the pursuit of those connected to her abduction.
