Georgia Mother Sentenced to 40 Years Behind Bars After Subjecting 9-Year-Old Daughter to Years of Abuse

A Georgia mother will spend the next four decades behind bars after a jury found her guilty of subjecting her 9-year-old daughter to years of horrific abuse, starvation and confinement. Kristy Cooley was sentenced to 80 years in prison, with 40 years to be served behind bars, following her conviction on multiple charges involving the mistreatment of her middle child. Prosecutors described the treatment as a prolonged case of child torture, involving severe physical and psychological abuse as well as medical neglect.

According to evidence presented during the trial, Cooley singled out her 9-year-old daughter while the other children in the household were not subjected to the same treatment. The girl was reportedly locked inside her bedroom for days at a time and deprived of adequate food. She was forced to use a bucket as a toilet and sometimes had to sneak out of her room just to find something to eat. Prosecutors said cameras had been installed throughout the home in Lilburn, Georgia, allowing Cooley to monitor the child’s movements and behavior.

The abuse reportedly became even more severe when the girl was caught trying to find food. Prosecutors said Cooley beat her with sticks and a metal pipe, tied her up and burned her body until she lost consciousness. Medical testimony described the physical injuries, psychological harm and lack of proper medical care as evidence of extreme abuse. Investigators also discovered photographs on Cooley’s cellphone showing the child with a black eye when she was only 5 or 6 years old, suggesting that the mistreatment had begun years before the case came to light.

The disturbing situation was eventually uncovered after an online teacher noticed warning signs during mandatory student check-ins. Concerned about what she was seeing, the educator contacted law enforcement. Prosecutors credited the teacher’s intervention with bringing the child’s circumstances to the attention of authorities. They also revealed that Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services had previously been alerted to conditions in the household when the girl was a toddler, but prosecutors said there had been little follow-up.

A jury ultimately convicted Cooley of two counts of aggravated battery, eight counts of first-degree cruelty to children and two counts of tampering with evidence. Jurors reportedly recommended a sentence totaling 242 years, but the judge imposed an 80-year prison sentence, requiring Cooley to serve 40 years in custody. The girl’s stepfather had also been charged in connection with the abuse, but he died before he could stand trial.

The case has raised serious questions about how a child could endure years of mistreatment before someone outside the household recognized the warning signs. Prosecutors emphasized the importance of paying attention when children show signs of distress and speaking up when something appears wrong. For the young girl at the center of the case, the teacher’s decision to report her concerns became a crucial step toward getting authorities involved and bringing the abuse to an end.
