Disabled Man Finally Joins Bonfire Party, Only to Be Brutally Attacked by Two Teens Who Told Him to “Smile” for the Camera

A Florida man with physical and mental disabilities reportedly worked up the courage to attend a bonfire gathering and socialize with people he did not know. But what should have been an opportunity to make friends turned into a frightening ordeal when two young men allegedly attacked him, repeatedly punching, slapping and kicking him while someone filmed the assault. Even as the victim pleaded for them to stop and asked what he had done wrong, the attackers allegedly continued, with one person behind the camera telling him to smile.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. on October 23, 2026, at a bonfire gathering in Tiger Bay State Forest in Volusia County, near Daytona Beach. According to an arrest affidavit, the victim had been brought to the party by a friend. Feeling uncomfortable because he did not know anyone, he initially remained inside his friend’s truck for about an hour. Eventually, he gathered the courage to join the others and began socializing. Later, he was sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck when the confrontation allegedly began.
Investigators said 19-year-old Sabastian Bowers approached the victim and slapped him. Eighteen-year-old Cody Stripling then allegedly joined in, punching and slapping the man before Bowers knocked him to the ground. Once the victim was down, Bowers reportedly continued striking and kicking him while wearing work boots. A video lasting more than two minutes captured portions of the attack. Throughout the ordeal, the victim repeatedly asked, “What did I do?” while trying to protect himself from the blows.
The recording reportedly showed someone pushing a cellphone close to the victim’s face and demanding that he smile. At that point, the man was bleeding from his mouth. When he tried to swat the phone away, the person filming reprimanded him for touching it. Bowers allegedly made further degrading remarks as the victim lay injured. According to investigators, Bowers also grabbed the man’s hair and pulled his head backward, while Stripling allegedly placed him in a chokehold. The victim continued begging the group to stop, asking why they were hurting him.
The victim suffered a concussion, along with multiple cuts and bruises across his body. Authorities noted that he has a visible birth defect affecting his right hand, which limits its use. His mother also told investigators that she believed he had a minor mental disability that had not yet been formally diagnosed. Deputies said the victim had not acted aggressively toward the suspects. His friend eventually returned, intervened and helped get him away from the attackers. The victim was subsequently treated for his injuries and identified Bowers and Stripling as two of the people involved.
Both suspects were arrested and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail. They face charges including aggravated battery involving a disabled person and battery by strangulation, according to authorities. Investigators are also looking for other individuals who may have participated in the assault, including the person who recorded the video. Bowers and Stripling were being held without bond, with their next court appearance scheduled for December 8, 2026. Neither has been convicted in connection with the incident. The investigation continues as authorities work to identify everyone involved in an attack that left the victim injured after he had simply tried to join a social gathering.
