Convicted Killer Who Escaped Tennessee Prison by Slipping Through Fence Captured After Nine-Day Manhunt
A convicted murderer serving a life sentence is back behind bars after an extraordinary escape from a Tennessee prison triggered a multistate manhunt. Jacob Morley, 28, was captured in Missouri on November 3, bringing an end to more than a week of uncertainty after he managed to slip through a prison perimeter fence and disappear.

Morley escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, on October 25. Prison officials realized he was missing at approximately 11:30 p.m. during a routine nighttime inmate count. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage and discovered that Morley had breached the facility’s perimeter fence while still wearing his prison uniform. Authorities have not publicly explained exactly how he managed to get through the security barrier.
The escape quickly turned into a wider search when investigators identified surveillance footage showing Morley allegedly stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 pickup truck from a nearby farm in the early hours of October 26. The vehicle was eventually discovered abandoned in Marion, Illinois, approximately 120 miles from the prison. However, Morley was nowhere to be found, leaving investigators searching across state lines for the convicted killer.
The search finally came to an end near Kansas City, Missouri. According to authorities, investigators received information that Morley might be traveling west along Interstate 70. License plate readers, undercover officers and a Kansas City police helicopter helped track the vehicle. The pursuit led officers into Carroll County, where the truck left the roadway and became stuck. Troopers took Morley into custody around noon without incident.
Morley was already serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of his former co-worker, Cody Birchfield. Birchfield had been reported missing after he was last seen in February of that year. Weeks later, investigators discovered his body hidden inside a box beneath Morley’s home in Carter County, Tennessee. Morley was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder, along with aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism and evading arrest. When deputies initially arrived at his home during the investigation, he reportedly fled, leading officers on a chase that ended in North Carolina.
Following the escape, authorities launched an extensive search around the prison and offered a reward of up to $17,500 for information leading to Morley’s capture. His successful recapture brings relief after days of concern about a convicted killer being at large. The incident has also renewed questions about security at Tennessee’s correctional facilities, particularly as the Northwest Correctional Complex has faced other serious incidents involving violence and staffing concerns. For now, Morley is back in custody, and the circumstances surrounding his prison escape remain an important part of the investigation.
