SIX-YEAR-OLD CAROLINE LYNCH HAD RARE GENETIC DISORDER BEFORE FATAL PARKING GARAGE FALL WITH FATHER AND BROTHER

A six-year-old girl who died alongside her older brother and father in a suspected murder-suicide in Pennsylvania had been living with a rare genetic condition that affected her development and health, according to an interview previously given by her mother.

Caroline Lynch, her eight-year-old brother James Lynch, and their 42-year-old father, Patrick Lynch, were found with fatal injuries near a five-story parking garage in Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, on Tuesday afternoon, November 3.
Police said preliminary information indicated that the incident was a murder-suicide and emphasized that investigators were not treating it as an accident.
The tragedy has since drawn renewed attention to Caroline’s medical history, including her diagnosis of Williams syndrome and additional heart and lung conditions. However, authorities have not suggested that her health conditions explain what happened, and investigators have not publicly established a motive.

THREE FAMILY MEMBERS FOUND DEAD NEAR PARKING GARAGE
Emergency services were called to the area behind the Mt. Lebanon municipal building shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday following reports of an apparent fall.
Responders found Patrick and his two children suffering from severe injuries consistent with a fall from height.
All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Chief Jason Haberman described the incident as extremely distressing for the community and those who responded.
He said investigators were examining the circumstances and that preliminary information pointed to a murder-suicide.
Authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of the moments leading up to the incident. The precise sequence of events and the father’s motive remain unknown.

MEDICAL EXAMINER RULES THE CHILDREN’S DEATHS HOMICIDES
On Wednesday, November 4, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that James and Caroline died from multiple blunt force injuries. Their deaths were classified as homicides.
The medical examiner’s findings established the manner of death for the two children, while the investigation into the circumstances continued.
Patrick Lynch also died at the scene, but officials had not publicly released his cause and manner of death in the latest available reports.
The police investigation is examining how the three ended up at the parking garage and what happened before emergency responders arrived.
The homicide rulings for the children are significant medical findings, but they do not by themselves provide a complete account of the incident or establish every detail of the suspected murder-suicide.

CAROLINE HAD WILLIAMS SYNDROME
The tragedy has also brought attention to Caroline’s medical history.
In a 2025 interview with Mt. Lebanon Magazine, her mother, Anna Lynch, explained that Caroline was diagnosed with Williams syndrome shortly after she was born in 2020.
She also had heart and lung disease.
“When she was born in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, we found out she had Williams syndrome and heart and lung disease,” Anna recalled in the interview.
The diagnosis initially left the family facing unfamiliar challenges. Her mother explained that she did not know other families raising children with disabilities and was unsure where to turn for guidance and support.
Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by the absence of a small portion of chromosome 7. It can affect several aspects of development and physical health.
Children with the condition may experience developmental and learning differences, distinctive behavioral characteristics and cardiovascular problems. The severity and combination of symptoms vary from person to person.
Some individuals require ongoing medical care, particularly when heart or blood vessel complications are present.
Caroline’s diagnosis was part of her personal medical history, but no evidence has been publicly presented connecting the condition to the circumstances of Tuesday’s tragedy.

HER FAMILY’S STORY NOW HAS A DEVASTATING NEW CHAPTER
Caroline and James were both members of the Mt. Lebanon school community.
The deaths have left classmates, educators, neighbors and other residents struggling to understand the tragedy.
The Mt. Lebanon School District released a statement expressing sadness over the deaths and offering support to members of the school community affected by the loss.
The municipality also acknowledged the emotional impact on residents and first responders.
Police Chief Haberman said the incident would leave significant trauma within the community.
A fundraising campaign organized by family friend Gina Pugliano was established to support the children’s mother, Anna, as she faces the loss of both children.
Donations began arriving from people wishing to help the grieving family with the difficult period ahead.
INVESTIGATORS HAVE NOT RELEASED A MOTIVE
Despite the medical examiner’s findings and the police department’s preliminary assessment, several important questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not publicly explained what led Patrick Lynch to the parking garage with his children or what happened immediately before the fatal falls.
Investigators have also not released a confirmed motive.
Caroline’s Williams syndrome and other medical conditions have attracted attention because of her mother’s earlier interview, but they should not be treated as an explanation for the tragedy.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events.
For the Mt. Lebanon community, the loss involves two young children whose lives ended far too soon. For their mother, Anna, the tragedy has left an unimaginable absence.
Caroline was six years old. Her brother James was eight.
