Woman Accused of Choking High School Football Player During Chaotic Game as Police Reveal Disturbing Details

A high school football game in Kentucky took an alarming turn when a 36-year-old woman allegedly grabbed a teenage player from behind and violently choked him during a confrontation on the field. Kayla Barrett, of East Bernstadt, was arrested after the October 30 incident involving Wayne County High School and North Laurel High School in Monticello. What began as a competitive football matchup ended with a player needing medical attention, spectators rushing onto the field, and authorities launching a criminal investigation.

According to the Monticello Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Wayne County emergency room after receiving a report that a student-athlete had been assaulted during the game. Investigators determined that a female spectator had allegedly approached the player from behind and strangled him. The victim, who is a minor, was evaluated for injuries and reportedly experienced difficulty breathing following the encounter.

An arrest warrant obtained by local media provided more details about the alleged attack. Barrett reportedly placed both hands on the back of the player’s neck and violently shook him in an attempt to obstruct his airway. The warrant also stated that several people witnessed the assault and that video footage obtained from the North Laurel football program showed Barrett near the location where the alleged strangulation occurred. Authorities have not publicly identified the student.

The incident unfolded during a larger disturbance involving spectators from both teams. With approximately six minutes and 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter, players became involved in a confrontation near the North Laurel sideline, prompting fans to enter the field. Amid the chaos, players and others had to be separated, and officials eventually stopped the game. North Laurel was leading 21–12 when play ended, and the team was ultimately awarded the victory.

Kentucky State Police arrested Barrett on November 3, and she was charged with second-degree strangulation, a felony offense. She was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center before being released on a $5,000 cash bond the following day. As a condition of her release, court documents reportedly prohibited her from attending any school sporting events in Kentucky. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not yet been proven in court.

The Monticello Police Department strongly condemned the alleged violence, emphasizing that young athletes should be able to compete without fear of being physically attacked. The department stated that intense emotions during sporting events never justify violence against players, coaches, officials, or spectators. For the young athlete and his family, the incident has turned what should have been an ordinary night of high school football into a deeply troubling experience. Authorities have not released further information about the player’s condition or what specifically prompted the confrontation.
