Newborn Baby Found Inside Freezer at Late Woman’s Home as Police Investigate Whether the Child Died More Than 20 Years Ago

A disturbing discovery inside a family home in northwestern Spain has prompted a police investigation after a woman found the body of a newborn baby hidden inside a freezer while clearing out her late mother’s property. The discovery was made in Allariz, a town in the Galicia region, after the daughter opened a freezer in a storage room connected to the home’s garage. Authorities are now working to identify the infant and establish how and when the child died.

According to reports, the woman immediately contacted police after finding the baby’s remains. Initial forensic examinations suggest the infant may have been inside the freezer for more than two decades. Investigators estimate that the baby had been between 32 and 34 weeks into the pregnancy. Specialists also reportedly found evidence that the infant had breathed air, meaning the remains were not simply those of an unborn fetus. However, authorities have not yet determined whether the baby was stillborn or alive after delivery.

The case has been referred for a detailed forensic examination by the Galician Institute of Legal Medicine. Specialists will attempt to establish the cause of death and determine whether the infant died before, during, or after birth. DNA samples have also been collected and sent to a laboratory in Madrid in an effort to identify the baby’s biological parents. Investigators are examining whether the child was connected to the family who owned the property or whether the body may have been brought there from another location.

Police are also looking into the possibility that the freezer was used to conceal the remains for many years. At this stage, no suspect has been publicly identified and authorities have not announced any arrests. The investigation is particularly challenging because the discovery may involve events that occurred more than 20 years ago. Under Spanish law, the limitation period for certain crimes against life is 20 years, potentially creating significant legal obstacles if investigators establish that a criminal offense occurred so long ago.

For now, the most important unanswered questions concern the baby’s identity and the circumstances of the death. Investigators need to determine whether the child was born alive, whether anyone was responsible for the death, and why the remains were kept in the freezer. Until the forensic findings are complete, authorities cannot establish whether the case involves a stillbirth, a death caused by negligence, or a criminal act.

The discovery has left a family property at the center of a deeply unsettling investigation. What began as an ordinary effort to clear out a deceased relative’s home has turned into a search for answers about a newborn whose identity may have remained unknown for decades. Police continue examining the evidence, hoping modern forensic testing will finally reveal what happened to the child.
