After His Wife’s Death, Caleb Flynn Told His Young Daughters to Lie to Police

In a chilling new revelation from the Caleb Flynn case, prosecutors say the former American Idol contestant tried to use his own young daughters to protect himself after their mother, Ashley Flynn, was killed.

According to a sentencing memorandum obtained by PEOPLE, Flynn allegedly told his two daughters, who were just 9 and 11 years old at the time, that what they told investigators could determine whether he lived or died. Prosecutors said he instructed the girls to lie about what happened and to hide the fact that he had coached them.

The girls ultimately told investigators the truth. Their accounts became part of the case against their father as authorities pieced together what happened inside the family’s Ohio home.

Ashley Flynn was killed in February 2026. Prosecutors argued that Caleb had staged the home to make it appear that an intruder was responsible. A jury later found him guilty of aggravated murder, felonious assault and evidence tampering.

The case became even more disturbing during trial testimony about Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, a woman he met through his church. Prosecutors presented messages between the pair that showed Flynn discussing Ashley’s death and expressing a desire to be free of his marriage. Botner testified during the trial but has not been charged with a crime.

On October 5, Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But perhaps the most emotional moment came when statements from his daughters were read aloud in court.

One daughter described her mother as her best friend and questioned why her father had chosen to take her away. The other questioned whether he had ever considered the pain his actions would cause his children. She ultimately told him she did not plan to visit him in prison.

As their words were read, Flynn broke down in tears. Earlier in the hearing, he had also addressed his daughters emotionally, telling them how proud he was of them while continuing to maintain his innocence.

The judge ultimately described Flynn’s conduct as involving “layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty,” handing him a sentence that ensures he will spend the rest of his life behind bars unless his conviction is overturned on appeal. His defense has said it plans to appeal.

For Ashley’s two daughters, however, the sentence cannot undo what happened. They lost their mother — and were then placed in the devastating position of having to confront the truth about their father.
