MISSING PEDIATRIC NURSE’S HUSBAND GOES ON TRIAL — HER BODY HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND

More than two years after 28-year-old pediatric nurse Mamta Kafle Bhatt vanished without a trace, the man she was married to is finally facing a jury.

Naresh Bhatt, 39, has pleaded not guilty to murder and defiling a dead body in connection with his wife’s presumed death. Mamta disappeared in July 2024, and despite an extensive investigation, her body has never been found. Jury selection began this week in Virginia, with the trial expected to last as long as seven weeks.

Mamta was a young mother who worked as a pediatric nurse. Concern first grew when she failed to show up for work. On August 2, 2024, her coworkers requested a welfare check at the couple’s home after she had not reported for her shift.

When officers arrived, Naresh reportedly told them that he and Mamta had recently agreed to separate and were in the process of selling their home. He allegedly claimed that she had left and suggested she might have gone to Texas or New York.

But Mamta’s family and friends were convinced something was wrong. They said she would never simply disappear and leave behind her young daughter.

As investigators began looking into her disappearance, attention increasingly focused on the family home — and prosecutors say they discovered evidence that pointed to a violent death.

Among the evidence investigators reportedly found was blood inside the bathroom and a closet. Crime scene investigators used Bluestar, a chemical that can reveal traces of blood that are not readily visible. Prosecutors have described the amount of blood detected as extraordinary, although the defense has challenged how much significance should be placed on the Bluestar findings.

Then investigators uncovered another troubling detail.

In the days after Mamta was last seen, prosecutors say Naresh purchased cleaning supplies and a package containing three knives. When detectives searched the home, most of the cleaning products and two of the knives were reportedly missing.

The case also includes digital and forensic evidence. According to the criminal complaint, investigators believe evidence indicated that Mamta’s body had been inside the residence and was subsequently dragged out. Prosecutors have also referenced human hairs and fibers allegedly discovered on a power saw inside the home.

And then there were the computer searches.

Investigators reportedly found searches on a device Naresh was known to use, including one asking how long it takes to remarry after a spouse’s death. Prosecutors are expected to argue that this and other evidence help establish what happened to Mamta and what may have happened after her disappearance.

But there is still one enormous piece missing from the case: Mamta herself.

Her body has never been recovered, meaning prosecutors must convince jurors that the evidence is enough to prove she was killed — and that Naresh was responsible.

Now, more than two years after Mamta vanished, the evidence will finally be tested inside a courtroom.

What really happened inside the couple’s home before Mamta disappeared? Why were cleaning supplies and knives allegedly purchased afterward? And can prosecutors prove a murder when the victim’s body has never been found?
