Indiana Father and Stepmother Accused of Confined, Starving 14-Year-Old Daughter to Death

An Indiana father and stepmother are facing serious felony charges after investigators alleged that their 14-year-old daughter was confined to her bedroom, closely monitored by cameras and denied adequate food and medical care for months before she died.

Jerry Lavette Mayfield Jr. and Toris Michelle Mayfield are accused of neglecting Jamiyah Mayfield, who died in July 2025 after suffering severe malnutrition and dehydration. Arrest warrants have been issued for both adults, according to court records.

A Teenager’s Health Rapidly Deteriorated

Authorities say the investigation began after Toris Mayfield called 911 on July 2, 2025, reporting that Jamiyah was experiencing a medical emergency.

The teenager was found unresponsive and transported to a Bloomington hospital, where she later died.

What investigators uncovered afterward painted a disturbing picture of Jamiyah’s final months.

According to court documents, Jamiyah weighed about 124 pounds in January 2025. By the time of her death, she reportedly weighed only 80 pounds.

Investigators said she had been removed from the Monroe County public school system in February and placed in a homeschooling arrangement. Around the same period, authorities began receiving information suggesting that Jamiyah was being isolated inside the family home.

A report made to Indiana’s Department of Child Services allegedly stated that the girl was confined to the house and that school had been her primary source of social interaction. The report reportedly did not result in further action because Jamiyah was no longer attending school.

Locked Inside Her Own Bedroom

Investigators later examined security footage from inside the Mayfield home and allegedly found evidence that Jamiyah’s freedom became increasingly restricted.

Her bedroom door had reportedly been modified so it could be locked from the outside. A screw was also allegedly placed in the frame of the room’s only window, preventing it from being opened.

Police said a security camera was positioned inside the teenager’s bedroom, allowing her caregivers to monitor her remotely.

According to the affidavits, Jamiyah had to ask permission to use the bathroom and was allegedly restricted from accessing food and water.

Investigators also reviewed footage that they said showed a dramatic decline in the girl’s physical condition. Her bedroom, which had previously contained furniture, clothing and bedding, reportedly became increasingly bare as her health deteriorated.

The footage allegedly showed Jamiyah losing weight and experiencing other visible signs of physical decline.

Evidence Allegedly Shows Food Was Restricted

Investigators also examined messages exchanged between Jerry and Toris Mayfield.

According to court documents, the messages allegedly included discussions about what food Jamiyah was allowed to eat, with restrictions that did not apply in the same way to other members of the household.

The parents reportedly told medical personnel that Jamiyah was refusing food, including allegations that she would spit out food. However, investigators said the evidence they collected raised concerns that the teenager’s access to food was being deliberately restricted.

Jamiyah had been treated at IU Health in May 2025 for leg swelling. Medical records cited by investigators reportedly documented significant weight loss and marks on her skin.

Authorities said there was no adequate follow-up care addressing the severe deterioration in her nutritional condition.

Autopsy Findings Changed the Direction of the Case

Jamiyah’s death initially received a different medical explanation.

An autopsy completed in October 2025 initially attributed her death to a medication-related heart rhythm problem. Investigators continued reviewing the case, however, including medical records, video footage, phone data and other evidence.

The autopsy was later amended.

According to the updated findings cited in court documents, Jamiyah died from complications of severe protein-calorie malnutrition and dehydration.

A child-abuse pediatrician who reviewed the evidence reportedly concluded that the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s starvation were consistent with child torture. That assessment is part of the investigators’ evidence and is not itself a court finding.

A Life Cut Short

Jamiyah was described by her family as a bright and loving teenager who enjoyed singing and dancing.

Her biological grandmother, Jevona Starks, created a fundraiser to help provide Jamiyah with what she described as the dignified burial her granddaughter deserved. The family remembered the teenager for her smile and joyful personality.

Now, more than a year after Jamiyah’s death, her father and stepmother are facing felony neglect charges.

Authorities allege that after Jamiyah was removed from school, she experienced a medically unacceptable decline in weight while being isolated, denied adequate access to food and deprived of necessary medical care.

The case remains pending. The allegations against Jerry and Toris Mayfield have not been proven in court, and they are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty.
