Charlize Theron Is Embracing a More Masculine Style — and Her Daughters Aren’t Loving It

Charlize Theron is entering a new chapter in her personal style, trading some of her high heels for comfortable flats and leaning further into masculine, gender-neutral fashion. But while the Oscar-winning actress is enjoying the change, her two daughters aren’t exactly enthusiastic about their mom’s latest look.

Theron, 51, opened up about her evolving fashion choices in an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE at the Veuve Clicquot Club Solaire VIP Opening in Venice Beach, Los Angeles.

“I think I used to wear more heels, and I’m more of a flat girl now, for sure,” Theron said, explaining that she has always been drawn to masculine and gender-neutral clothing, even as she continues to enjoy feminine pieces from time to time.

“I think I’m pretty diversified in my style,” she added. “But I think now, I’m leaning a little bit more into the masculine.”

Her daughters, Jackson, 14, and August, 12, however, apparently aren’t entirely sold on the transformation.

“My daughters are not too happy about that … where mom is right now,” Theron joked.

A More Relaxed Approach to Fashion

Theron’s style evolution reflects a more relaxed approach to everyday life. Known for her glamorous red-carpet appearances, the actress has increasingly embraced clothing that prioritizes comfort and practicality outside of major events.

As a mother of two, she also has plenty to juggle beyond Hollywood premieres and fashion shoots. Theron has previously described herself as an “Uber driver” for her children, a role that leaves less room for elaborate beauty routines and uncomfortable footwear.

Her preference for flats and gender-neutral pieces doesn’t mean she has abandoned femininity. Instead, she appears comfortable moving between different looks depending on her mood and the occasion.

The shift also reflects a broader fashion landscape in which women increasingly mix traditionally masculine tailoring with feminine silhouettes, creating wardrobes that are less constrained by conventional gender expectations.

The Fashion Pieces She’s Saving for Her Daughters

Although her daughters may not be fans of their mother’s current style, Theron has accumulated a collection of clothing and fashion pieces that they may appreciate in the future.

The actress revealed that she has kept a substantial selection of special items in the basement, much to her daughters’ interest.

“We have a pretty good stockpile in the basement that they always talk about,” she said.

Theron recalled one occasion when one of her daughters was looking for an outfit for an all-white event and began rummaging through the boxes.

“And I was like, ‘No, no, no. This is not for now. For later,’” she recalled.

The anecdote suggests that while her daughters may disagree with some of her current fashion choices, they are already curious about the wardrobe treasures their mother has collected throughout her career.

As a Dior ambassador who has spent decades working with designers and stylists, Theron has had access to an extraordinary range of fashion. Preserving some of those pieces gives her daughters the chance to discover them when they are older.

How Hollywood Has Changed Her Relationship With Clothes

Theron has also spoken about the way the entertainment industry once approached clothing and appearance, particularly for women.

Looking back on the early years of her career, she recalled a time when performers had less control over what they were expected to wear.

“When I started, there was no conversation around it. It was like, ‘This is what you’re wearing,’” she previously said.

Her experience reflects a broader shift in Hollywood, where more actors now speak openly about personal boundaries, body image and having a say in how they are presented on screen and in public.

For Theron, developing a style that feels authentic appears to be part of that evolution. Rather than committing to a single aesthetic, she enjoys experimenting with different looks while choosing pieces that suit her lifestyle.

A Low-Key Halloween at Home

Theron also shared a glimpse into her family’s Halloween plans, revealing that the holiday has become more relaxed as her children grow older.

“I’m not a big Halloween person, but you become [one] when you have kids,” she said, explaining that Jackson and August have always loved the holiday.

Now that her daughters are older, however, they increasingly prefer to celebrate independently.

“They want to go do their own thing,” Theron said. “And I get to go home and watch a TV show. It’s perfect.”

Her comments capture the changing rhythms of parenting teenagers: the excitement of family traditions remains, but children gradually seek more independence.

Between her evolving wardrobe, her daughters’ growing interests and her plans for a quieter Halloween evening, Theron seems content to embrace a new phase of life on her own terms.

And if her daughters aren’t quite ready to embrace their mother’s more masculine fashion era, Theron appears perfectly happy to keep wearing what makes her feel most like herself.
