Three Teenagers Tragically Drowned After Car Plunged Into River as Inquest Reveals Heartbreaking Details

Three teenagers lost their lives in a devastating car accident in Sunderland, England, after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into the River Wear. An inquest has now revealed further details about the tragedy, as grieving families and friends continue to mourn the loss of three young lives cut short far too soon.

The victims were identified as Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16. The three teenagers were travelling in an Audi A3 when it crashed through a metal barrier near Wearmouth Bridge and entered the river on September 29, 2026.

According to the inquest, emergency services were called to the Panns Bank area after reports that four people had gone into the water. One of the teenagers, a 17-year-old boy, managed to escape from the submerged vehicle. Tragically, the other three were unable to get out and were later discovered by divers still inside the car.

Post-mortem examinations indicated that the teenagers’ deaths were consistent with drowning, the inquest heard on October 12. The hearings were adjourned until January 21, 2027, while police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A fourth teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released on bail pending further inquiries. Investigators are continuing to establish exactly what happened before the car entered the river, including who was driving at the time.

The tragedy has left the local community heartbroken. During Sunderland’s Premier League match against Brighton, supporters observed a minute’s applause in memory of the teenagers, while Sunderland players wore black armbands as a mark of respect. The club also expressed its condolences to the victims’ families, friends and everyone affected by the devastating loss.

Behind the headlines are three young people whose futures were filled with possibilities. As the investigation continues, their families are left facing an unimaginable loss, while the wider community comes together to remember the teenagers and offer support to those grieving.
