British Pensioner John Agner Found Dead Outside His French Village Home as Two Men Face Life in Prison
A quiet French village has been left reeling after an elderly British retiree was found dead outside his home in a case that has raised disturbing questions about a violent attack, a stolen car and a chain of events that ultimately led investigators to two suspects.

John Agner, an 84-year-old British pensioner originally from Southampton, had spent around two decades building a quiet life with his wife in Verlus, a small rural village in southwestern France. Known as a retired woodworker who enjoyed a peaceful lifestyle, he had settled far from the bustle of city life. But in September 2026, that tranquillity was shattered by a discovery that shocked the close-knit community.
John was found outside his home on September 26, suffering from multiple injuries to his face. Investigators also discovered signs of a struggle inside the property. His death prompted a major investigation by French authorities, who initially faced the difficult task of determining who was responsible and what had happened during the hours before his body was discovered.
The investigation took a crucial turn after police attempted to stop a car near Mont-de-Marsan during the night of September 25–26. The vehicle’s occupants refused to stop and eventually abandoned the car before fleeing on foot. Officers subsequently traced the vehicle to John, prompting gendarmes to visit his home in Verlus, where they discovered his body.
What initially appeared to be an investigation into a suspicious death soon expanded as police pursued several potential suspects. Authorities later announced that two men, aged 32 and 26, had been formally charged in connection with a robbery involving violence that resulted in death. Both men were remanded in custody as the judicial investigation continued.

The case gathered further momentum after one of the suspects was linked to a separate attempted murder in Mont-de-Marsan in October. That investigation led to a broader series of arrests, with six people detained during the wider inquiry. Prosecutors said searches and questioning helped strengthen the initial evidence, while those implicated reportedly acknowledged involvement to varying degrees.
The older suspect reportedly had 21 previous convictions, many involving theft, while the younger man had no previous convictions. Their alleged roles and the precise circumstances surrounding John’s death remain matters for the ongoing legal process. If convicted of the relevant offences, the men could face life imprisonment under French law.
Beyond the investigation, the tragedy has left residents struggling to understand how such violence could occur in their peaceful village. Verlus has a population of only around 120 people, where neighbours are accustomed to a quiet rural existence. The news of John’s death therefore came as a profound shock to those who believed their community was far removed from such a disturbing crime.
Jean Menvielle, the village mayor, expressed the community’s disbelief at what had happened. John and his wife had lived in the area for approximately 20 years, but his wife had been hospitalised since July, leaving him living alone at the property when the fatal incident occurred.
John’s story has also drawn attention to the vulnerability of elderly people living alone in remote areas. For residents who choose the French countryside for its peace and privacy, the case has raised unsettling questions about personal safety and the dangers that can remain hidden behind the quiet appearance of rural life.
As the judicial investigation continues, authorities are still working to establish the full sequence of events and the circumstances that led to John’s death. For his loved ones and the people of Verlus, however, the consequences are already irreversible. A man who had spent his retirement living quietly in the French countryside has become the centre of a case that has shaken an entire community, leaving behind grief, unanswered questions and a search for justice.
