Toddler, 2, Killed in Horror SUV Accident During Family Pumpkin-Picking Trip as Dad Reveals His Heartbreak
A family trip that was supposed to be filled with autumn fun and happy memories ended in unimaginable tragedy when a two-year-old boy was struck and killed by a reversing SUV at a pumpkin farm in New Jersey. His grandmother was also hit and left trapped beneath the vehicle, while the little boy’s father faced the devastating reality of losing his young son.

James Gabriel, affectionately known by his family as “Jimmy James,” was visiting Bullock Farms in Cream Ridge on October 3, 2026. The family had planned a simple day together, picking pumpkins before heading home to watch football. Instead, the outing became a nightmare that would change their lives forever.
The crash happened at around 11 a.m. in the farm’s parking area. According to reports, a Chrysler SUV reversed into James and his 66-year-old grandmother, Ellen Gabriel. The boy’s father, Robert Gabriel, had been walking ahead with his four-month-old daughter when the vehicle struck his son and mother.
Robert later described the family’s devastation in an interview with NJ.com. He said they had expected a beautiful weekend and had been looking forward to spending time together. The sudden loss was almost impossible to comprehend, especially as James had been a healthy, happy toddler just moments before the accident.

Ellen was trapped beneath the SUV but survived, reportedly suffering minor injuries. James, however, sustained fatal blunt-force injuries to his head. He was rushed to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he later died. Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether the driver will face charges, and the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
In the days after the tragedy, James’s parents shared touching memories of their little boy. His mother, Meiling, described how he found excitement in the smallest things in life. A plane passing overhead, a yellow school bus on the road or a car driving by could fill him with wonder. Through his eyes, she said, the family learned to slow down and appreciate the world around them.
His family’s obituary remembered him as a child with a beautiful smile and a personality far bigger than his tiny frame. They described him as “the light of our world,” saying that although his life was heartbreakingly short, the love and happiness he brought to those around him would never be forgotten.
Bullock Farms also expressed sorrow over the incident, describing the loss as unimaginable. A fundraiser was established to support the grieving family as they face the difficult days ahead.

For Robert and Meiling, the future now holds memories of the son they had hoped to watch grow up. A day meant for pumpkins, family time and football has instead become a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary outing can turn into tragedy. As the investigation continues, their family is left to mourn a little boy whose life touched them deeply, even in just two short years.
