Toddler, 22 Months, Dies After Being Hit by SUV While in His Firefighter Dad’s Arms at Shopping Center

A family’s ordinary shopping trip ended in unimaginable heartbreak when a 22-month-old boy was struck by an SUV while being carried by his father in a Georgia shopping center parking lot. Despite desperate efforts by bystanders and medical teams to save him, little Knox Skelton later died from his injuries, leaving his family and the local firefighting community devastated.

The tragic incident happened on Wednesday, October 7, at Limestone Marketplace in Gainesville, Georgia. Knox was being carried by his father, Samuel Skelton, an off-duty firefighter with the Gainesville Fire Department, as they made their way toward the Publix grocery store. The pair were reportedly out together when a vehicle suddenly left the roadway and struck them.

According to the Gainesville Police Department, the driver was a 68-year-old woman who was attempting to park a 2024 Ford Edge in an accessible parking space. Investigators said she inadvertently accelerated over a curb, hitting Samuel and his young son. The collision happened so unexpectedly that the father reportedly had no chance to react before the vehicle struck them.

People nearby immediately rushed to help. Bystanders began performing CPR on Knox before emergency responders arrived, desperately trying to keep the toddler alive. He was then airlifted to a children’s hospital in Atlanta for urgent medical treatment. His father was also struck but reportedly did not require medical care.

Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, Knox succumbed to his injuries. He was just weeks away from celebrating his second birthday. The devastating loss has left his parents, Samuel and Kiana Skelton, facing a tragedy no family should ever have to endure.

The Gainesville Police Department expressed its deepest condolences to the family and their loved ones. The incident has also deeply affected Samuel’s colleagues at the Gainesville Fire Department, where he serves as a firefighter. In a public statement, the department described Samuel and Kiana as humble, caring and genuine people, while asking the community to surround them with love and support during this painful time.

The department also acknowledged the emotional toll on emergency personnel who responded to the scene and later learned that the child involved was the son of one of their own. Firefighters are trained to face emergencies and help families through their darkest moments, but this tragedy brought the loss painfully close to home for the entire department.

To help the grieving family cope with the difficult days ahead, members of the Gainesville Fire Department organized an online fundraiser. The effort aims to provide practical and financial support as Samuel and Kiana navigate life after the devastating loss of their little boy.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No charges had been announced in the initial reports, and officials are examining evidence, including the vehicle’s condition, before determining whether any further action is warranted.

For Knox’s family, what began as a routine outing has become a heartbreaking loss that will forever change their lives. A toddler who had not yet reached his second birthday is gone, while his father and loved ones must begin the painful process of grieving. As the investigation continues, the community is rallying around the Skelton family, hoping to offer some comfort during an unimaginable time.
