Ohio Man Who Led Police to Missing Teen’s Remains Now Faces Federal Murder Charges
A case that began with the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl has taken a disturbing turn after an Ohio man who helped investigators locate her remains was indicted on nine federal charges. Tyler Nike Thomas, 39, of Columbus, is accused of kidnapping, sexually exploiting and murdering Hailey Buzbee, an Indiana teenager he allegedly met through online gaming. Months after he reportedly led police to her remains, prosecutors are now presenting a far more serious account of what they believe happened to the young girl.

Buzbee was last seen leaving her home in Fishers, Indiana, on January 5, 2026. When she failed to return, her family reported her missing. Investigators initially considered the possibility that she had run away, but the case soon took a darker direction as police examined her online contacts and retraced her movements before she disappeared. Authorities came to focus on Thomas, who allegedly knew Buzbee through gaming platforms including Roblox and League of Legends.
According to federal prosecutors, Thomas had been communicating with Buzbee for an extended period and allegedly began attempting to persuade her to engage in sexual activity when she was just 15. Prosecutors allege that in the early hours of January 6, he drove from Columbus to Fortville, Indiana, picked up the teenager and brought her back to Ohio. They believe she was killed during the alleged criminal conduct that followed. These allegations form the basis of the federal case, but they have not yet been proven in court.
Investigators reportedly used cellphone data to reconstruct Thomas’ movements after Buzbee disappeared. The records allegedly placed him at an Airbnb in Logan, Ohio, on January 6. The following morning, his phone was tracked to a trailhead in Wayne National Forest, where investigators say it remained for approximately five hours. Her remains were later discovered in the area. Prosecutors allege that Thomas attempted to conceal the crime by dismembering her body and burying or discarding the remains.

A forensic examination of Thomas’ phone allegedly uncovered deleted conversations with Buzbee, including Snapchat messages and sexually explicit images that prosecutors said were taken at his home in Columbus and at the Airbnb. Investigators believe the digital evidence could help establish the nature of their relationship and the events leading up to her death. The evidence also became an important part of the investigation as authorities worked to challenge Thomas’ initial account of what happened.
When police first questioned Thomas, he reportedly admitted to picking Buzbee up but claimed he had later dropped her off along a road in western Ohio. Investigators subsequently determined that his account was inconsistent with the evidence, according to police statements. Thomas was initially arrested on local charges related to the investigation, including pandering obscenity and tampering with evidence. On February 2, he led investigators to Buzbee’s remains in Perry County, Ohio, according to his attorney, who said Thomas had decided to assist law enforcement in locating her.
The case has since moved to federal court. On September 23, a grand jury returned a nine-count indictment against Thomas, including charges related to kidnapping resulting in death, the alleged sexual exploitation of a minor, obstruction of justice and other offenses. His attorney has said the defense is reviewing the evidence in preparation for the case. Thomas has not entered a plea to the federal charges, and the indictment represents allegations that prosecutors must prove.
For Buzbee’s family and community, the discovery of her remains brought an end to months of uncertainty but left behind profound grief. She was a student at HSC High School in Ohio and also worked part-time as a server at a local restaurant, according to reports. Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness remembered her as a bright presence in her family’s life, with tremendous promise and hope ahead of her. As the legal proceedings move forward, the central question is no longer simply where Hailey went after leaving home, but what happened during those final hours — and whether prosecutors can establish the full truth behind her death.
