Mystery Deepens After Decomposed Body of Man in Expensive Wetsuit Is Found at Remote Welsh Beauty Spot
A chilling mystery surrounding the death of an unidentified man whose decomposed body was discovered in a remote Welsh reservoir remains unsolved nearly two years later. Despite extensive police enquiries, forensic testing and a remarkable attempt to reconstruct his face, investigators are still struggling to establish who he was — and what happened in the final weeks of his life.

The grim discovery was made in October 2024 at Claerwen Reservoir in Mid Wales, a scenic but isolated location near Rhayader. A member of the public spotted a body floating in the water and alerted emergency services. When officers arrived, they faced a baffling scene: the man had no identification, no personal belongings and no obvious connection to the surrounding area.
A post-mortem examination established that the man was between 30 and 60 years old and approximately six feet tall. Investigators believe his body may have been in the water for as long as 12 weeks before it was found. The only significant item associated with him was a Zone3 Agile wetsuit in extra-large size, reportedly worth around £200. No nearby vehicle, clothing or other belongings were found that could help detectives trace his movements.
Police launched an extensive investigation, checking missing-person records and comparing forensic evidence against databases in the UK and overseas. DNA and fingerprint enquiries failed to reveal his identity. Investigators also sought assistance through international police channels, but even these efforts produced no definitive answer.
With conventional methods leading nowhere, detectives turned to specialists at Face Lab, a forensic facial reconstruction team at Liverpool John Moores University. Using medical scans, dental records, post-mortem photographs and other forensic information, the experts created a digital reconstruction of what the man may have looked like in life. The image was circulated through police systems and shared internationally in the hope that someone might recognize him.
Investigators hope the reconstruction will reach someone who remembers a friend, relative or acquaintance who disappeared around the time of the discovery. Police have also highlighted details of the man’s teeth and physical appearance, believing that these characteristics could help someone make a connection. Despite receiving numerous leads, however, the central question remains unanswered: who was he?
The circumstances surrounding his death are also unclear. Authorities have not established a definitive cause of death, and police have previously said that the information available did not point to a criminal element, while acknowledging that new evidence could change their assessment. The fact that no personal belongings were found nearby has added to the uncertainty, but investigators have not confirmed what led the man into the water.
Now, with an inquest expected to examine the case, detectives continue to appeal for information from anyone who visited the reservoir or knew someone matching the man’s description. For investigators, identifying him is about more than solving a puzzling case — it is about giving a name back to a person who may have family and friends still wondering what happened to him.
