Masked Cop Seen Entering Pregnant Woman’s Apartment on Night She Died — Hours Before His Wife Gave Birth

A chilling surveillance video has become a key focus in the trial of a former Massachusetts police officer accused of killing Sandra Birchmore, a 23-year-old woman who was pregnant at the time of her death. Prosecutors allege that Matthew Farwell entered Birchmore’s apartment building wearing a face mask and a hood pulled over his head on the night she died. He was reportedly inside for less than 30 minutes before leaving in a hurry. Just hours later, Farwell’s wife gave birth to the couple’s third child, adding another disturbing detail to a case that has shocked the public.

The footage was presented to jurors on October 13, 2026, as testimony began in Farwell’s federal murder trial in Boston. According to evidence described in court, he entered Birchmore’s condominium building at approximately 9:28 p.m. on February 1, 2021. His face was largely concealed by a mask, while his hood was pulled over his head. He was seen heading toward the elevator and did not appear again on camera until around 9:56 p.m., when he exited the building in what prosecutors described as a noticeably hurried manner. The footage has become an important part of the prosecution’s account of the final hours before Birchmore’s death.

Prosecutors allege that Farwell strangled Birchmore after she told him she was pregnant and believed he was the father. They further claim that he attempted to make her death look like a suicide. Birchmore was found dead in her apartment three days later, on February 4, 2021. At the time, her death was initially ruled a suicide, and the case remained closed for years. A subsequent FBI investigation led authorities to reassess the circumstances, and her death was officially reclassified as a homicide in 2024. Farwell was

The relationship between Birchmore and Farwell is another central element of the case. According to prosecutors, the two first met through the Stoughton Police Department’s youth Police Explorer program when Birchmore was just 13 years old. Authorities allege that Farwell groomed her and began sexually abusing her when she was 15, continuing the abuse into her adulthood. The allegations have raised serious questions about the use of authority and trust in relationships between police officers and young people participating in programs intended to introduce them to law enforcement.

During testimony, a detective who knew Farwell through the Stoughton Police Department told the court that she had never seen him wearing a mask at work, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prosecutors have highlighted this testimony as they examine why he allegedly concealed his face when visiting Birchmore’s building. The defense, however, has offered a different account of the visit, arguing that Farwell went to the apartment to end their relationship and maintaining that Birchmore died by suicide. The competing versions of events are expected to remain central as the trial progresses.

Another significant development concerns the pregnancy. Birchmore reportedly believed Farwell was the father of her unborn child, and prosecutors allege that the pregnancy played a role in the events leading to her death. However, DNA testing conducted in 2025 determined that Farwell was not the biological father. Investigators are continuing to rely on witness testimony, surveillance footage and other evidence to establish what happened inside the apartment and why Birchmore died.

Farwell has pleaded not guilty and maintains that Birchmore took her own life. If convicted, he could face life in prison. The trial is expected to last approximately four weeks, with jurors hearing testimony and examining evidence surrounding the case. For Birchmore’s loved ones, the proceedings represent a long-awaited opportunity to examine the circumstances of her death after years of uncertainty. As the trial continues, the surveillance footage of a masked man entering her building remains one of the most closely scrutinized pieces of evidence in a case filled with troubling allegations and unanswered questions.
