Bodycam Captures Tender Rescue: Marine Rescuer Gently Untangles Young Manatee From Rope and Debris in Mangrove Shallows

MANGROVE COAST — Newly released chest-mounted bodycam footage shows the delicate moment a marine rescuer waded into shallow mangrove water to free a young manatee tangled in rope, plant debris, and discarded fishing material.

The 15-second clip, timestamped the afternoon of October 14, opens with the rescuer moving slowly through the calm, tea-colored shallows. Near a thicket of mangrove roots, a young manatee floats partially submerged — a snarl of rope and vegetation cinched around its neck and upper body, an inflatable rescue boat waiting in the background.

What happens next is pure patience. The rescuer steadies in the water and slides one gloved hand beneath the manatee’s chin while the other begins carefully teasing the entanglement apart. The manatee blinks, looks straight into the lens with large, gentle eyes — and stays calm.

Strand by strand, the debris comes free, dripping back into the water. By the final seconds, the rescuer has cleared most of the tangle and is guiding the young animal toward open water, away from the roots. The manatee’s breathing steadies. It looks, unmistakably, relieved.

Manatees are slow-moving, curious grazers — and that same gentleness makes them vulnerable to exactly this kind of entanglement. Rescuers say the animal was alert throughout and swam off under its own power once freed.
