Indiana Father Accused of Fatally Shooting Man He Suspected Was Dating His Child’s Mother
A 23-year-old Indiana man is accused of shooting another man in the head on an apartment porch after developing a suspicion that the victim was romantically involved with the mother of his child. Investigators say the suspect admitted he had a “gut feeling” that his former girlfriend was cheating on him, but authorities have not established that the alleged relationship was real. What began as suspicion reportedly ended in a fatal shooting, leaving a young man dead and the accused facing a murder charge.

Jaymon Trey Gilreath was arrested shortly after the shooting death of 24-year-old Noah Slinkard in Bloomington, Indiana. According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of North Illinois Street at approximately 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. When emergency responders arrived, they found Slinkard on the front porch of an apartment with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
Slinkard was rushed to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to treat his injuries. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m. Witnesses told police that the suspected shooter had left the area on foot, prompting officers to search nearby streets. During the response, Gilreath himself reportedly called 911 and told dispatchers that he had just shot someone. Police located him at approximately 8:23 p.m. and took him into custody without incident. A handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was later recovered along the route he allegedly took from the scene.
According to investigators, Slinkard had been sitting on the apartment’s front porch with another man when Gilreath allegedly approached them. The witness told police he saw Gilreath pull a handgun from his waistband and shoot Slinkard in the head before turning around and walking away. The account gave investigators a key lead as they worked to establish what had happened and why the attack occurred.
Authorities believe jealousy and suspicion may have played a role in the killing. Several witnesses reportedly told officers that Gilreath believed Slinkard was involved with the mother of his child, who was also Gilreath’s former girlfriend. During an interview with detectives, Gilreath allegedly said he had a “gut feeling” that the woman was cheating on him with Slinkard. According to court documents cited by local media, Gilreath said he had planned to spend time with the woman earlier that day but became concerned when she did not answer his calls or text messages.
Gilreath reportedly told investigators that he later noticed the woman’s truck parked outside her mother’s home and saw Slinkard sitting on the porch. He had allegedly driven past the residence with friends before getting out of the vehicle. According to the reported account, he told his companions that he intended to fight Slinkard and warned them that if they heard a gunshot, they should leave. Gilreath allegedly later said he could not remember the shooting itself, but recalled walking away from the residence with a gun in his hand and realizing that he had shot Slinkard. Investigators also obtained surveillance footage that reportedly captured the shooting and Gilreath leaving the scene.
Gilreath was charged with one count of murder and was being held without bond at the Monroe County Jail, according to the report. He was scheduled for a bond review hearing on October 27, 2026, followed by a pretrial conference on November 18. The allegations have yet to be resolved in court, and the charge does not constitute a finding of guilt.
The case raises troubling questions about how an unconfirmed suspicion can escalate into irreversible violence. Investigators allege that Gilreath acted on his belief about his former girlfriend’s relationship with Slinkard, but the available account does not establish that the suspected affair actually existed. For Slinkard’s loved ones, the loss of a 24-year-old man has turned an ordinary evening into a devastating tragedy, while the legal process will determine Gilreath’s responsibility for the fatal shooting.
