British Man Jailed After Fatal Punch Kills His Younger Brother During Drunken Pub “Play-Fight”
A night of drinking between two brothers ended in an unimaginable tragedy when a playful confrontation turned violent, leaving one man dead and the other facing years behind bars. Brent Clayton, 62, has been sentenced to four years in prison after fatally punching his younger brother, Simon Clayton, 58, during an incident at a social club in Lancashire, England. The shocking encounter, captured on CCTV, showed how a brief exchange escalated into a fatal confrontation.

The incident took place on November 23, 2024, at Waterfoot Social Club in Rossendale. The brothers had reportedly spent much of the day drinking before meeting at the club later that evening. Footage from inside the venue showed Brent shadowboxing and moving around a function room before encouraging Simon to join him. Simon eventually stood up, and the pair appeared to engage in what initially looked like a mock fight.
But the situation quickly changed. According to the footage presented in court, Simon struck Brent on the lip, prompting Brent to move toward his younger brother and deliver a forceful punch to his face. He then threw another punch, sending Simon backward onto the floor, where he struck his head. Brent was seen raising his arms in what appeared to be a gesture of victory, while Simon lay seriously injured.
Witnesses who entered the room said Brent claimed Simon had hit him first. They also reported that Brent discouraged them from calling an ambulance, allegedly saying Simon would get up in a minute. When Simon failed to respond, a witness called emergency services. Paramedics arrived at the scene at approximately 11:45 p.m., and Simon was rushed to hospital. Despite medical treatment, he died the following day.

A post-mortem examination determined that Simon suffered a fatal brain injury linked to cardiac arrest and blunt-force trauma to the head. Acute alcohol intoxication was also identified as a contributing factor. Brent was initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. In footage recorded by police, he acknowledged striking his brother, saying that Simon had hit him first. He later maintained that the confrontation had been a play-fight that escalated while both men were drunk and expressed remorse over what had happened.
Brent denied manslaughter, but a jury at Preston Crown Court found him guilty following a trial. During sentencing, Judge Robert Altham rejected his claim of self-defense, pointing to CCTV footage and his comments to police. The judge told Brent that he had lost his brother and would have to live with the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. Brent was sentenced to four years in prison on October 14, 2026.
The devastating impact on Simon’s family was laid bare in a statement from his wife, who described him as a hardworking man with a larger-than-life personality. She said he had been her husband, best friend and protector, and the person she expected to grow old with. The family had been making plans for their future together, never imagining that their lives would be changed so violently by an incident involving someone Simon had known and trusted his entire life.
Simon’s death has left his loved ones grieving not only the loss of a husband and father, but also the future they had expected to share with him. Lancashire Police said the case demonstrated the devastating consequences that can follow a single act of violence. What began as an evening between brothers ended with one family member dead and another imprisoned—a painful reminder that even a confrontation dismissed as a joke can have irreversible consequences.
