Pennsylvania Father Accused of Killing His Doctor Wife and Setting Her Body on Fire While Their 7-Year-Old Daughter Slept Nearby
A Pennsylvania community has been left shaken after a respected pediatrician was found dead following a house fire, and investigators alleged that her husband had strangled her before deliberately setting her body on fire. Even more heartbreaking, the couple’s 7-year-old daughter was reportedly sleeping inside the home when the alleged killing took place.

Jonathan Gatto, 41, was arrested on October 14, 2026, in connection with the death of his wife, Dr. Julia Pederson, also 41. He is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson-related offenses, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child, according to authorities.
The investigation began shortly after 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, when emergency crews were called to the family’s home on Green Street in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for a reported fire. Firefighters found smoke inside the residence and discovered Pederson unresponsive in a first-floor bedroom. First responders attempted to save her before she was taken to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
At first, the incident appeared to involve a residential fire. However, investigators soon determined that the blaze had been intentionally set. An autopsy later found that Pederson had died from multiple traumatic injuries before the fire began, and her death was ruled a homicide. Police allege that Gatto strangled his wife and then set her body on fire in an attempt to conceal what had happened.
During questioning, Gatto reportedly told investigators that his marriage had been struggling and that the couple had been planning to separate. According to court documents, they had been discussing how and when to tell their young daughter about the impending separation. Gatto also described hearing a loud noise during the night that sounded like someone falling down the stairs, but he claimed he did not see what had happened.
Gatto reportedly said he later woke to the sound of smoke alarms, took his daughter out of the house, and called emergency services. He claimed he tried to reach his wife but burned his hand when he opened the bedroom door. Investigators are examining his account alongside the forensic evidence gathered at the scene. Authorities have not publicly established a motive beyond the circumstances described in the court documents.
Beyond the criminal allegations, Pederson’s death has devastated those who knew her through her work and personal life. She was a pediatrician with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Community Pediatrics team and was remembered by colleagues as a doctor dedicated to caring for children and supporting families. Her family described her as much more than a medical professional: she was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, and mother who enjoyed nature, reading, and learning to crochet.
The case leaves a young child facing the loss of her mother while authorities work to establish exactly what happened inside the family home. Gatto remains in custody without bond, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 28. He is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
