Private Texts From Friends of Teen Who Died on Mississippi Island Reveal Their Confusion, Suspicion and Fear After He Vanished

Newly revealed private messages from the friends of 18-year-old Nolan Wells are shedding light on the confusion and mounting concern that followed his disappearance during a Fourth of July gathering on Mississippi’s Horn Island. The conversations, recovered from Wells’ cellphone and detailed in a nearly 300-page digital forensic report, show friends trying to piece together his final known movements while grappling with questions from police and growing public scrutiny.

Wells disappeared during the holiday weekend celebration off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. His body was discovered along the shoreline of Horn Island on July 6, two days after he was last seen alive. According to the account given by his friends, they left the island after experiencing problems with their boat, while Wells remained behind and planned to find another ride. They said his cellphone was left aboard their vessel. His parents, however, have questioned this explanation, saying it was out of character for their son to stay behind without his phone.

The newly released messages show that Wells’ friends were asking where he was as early as the morning of July 5. One person reportedly wrote, “Nolan where the f—k are you dawg,” adding that the Coast Guard was searching for him. Another message asked whether anyone had seen him. As the hours passed without answers, the conversation grew increasingly uneasy, with one participant writing that there was “definitely some” suspicious activity going on.

The group also tried to reconstruct Wells’ last known movements. One message said he had gotten off a boat with another person and walked toward a different vessel around the time the group was preparing to leave. Others wondered whose boat he had intended to board and whether anyone had photographs or messages that might help establish what happened. These exchanges reveal the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance, but they do not independently establish that anyone harmed him.

The tone of the conversations changed dramatically when news spread on July 6 that Wells’ body had been found. Friends expressed shock and grief, with one describing him as a caring person and another urging the group to remain together and honor his memory. At the same time, some messages turned toward the possibility of police questioning. One participant advised others to seek legal counsel if contacted by investigators, while others urged the group not to speculate and to stick to what they personally knew.

As the case attracted national attention, the messages also reflected frustration over online accusations and claims of a cover-up. Some participants discussed how their words might be interpreted publicly, while others worried that people were drawing conclusions without knowing all the facts. The conversations later turned to Wells’ funeral, including whether friends should attend and how they might show their support for his family. Their private discussions offer a glimpse into the pressure the group experienced after the tragedy, but the messages alone cannot determine what happened during Wells’ final hours.

Wells’ family has continued to question the circumstances of his death, particularly the explanation that he chose to remain on the island. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office ultimately listed the cause and manner of death as undetermined, according to Oxygen. A grand jury reviewed evidence in the case, including information from the cellphone analysis, and returned a “no true bill” on September 18, meaning no criminal charges were authorized. The grand jury found no credible evidence that Wells’ friends had engaged in criminal conduct and concluded that the death was consistent with drowning. His friends have denied wrongdoing.

The release of the messages has renewed attention on a case that remains painful for Wells’ family and difficult for the public to understand. While the conversations document confusion, grief and suspicion among those who knew him, they do not resolve the central question: exactly what happened to Nolan Wells on Horn Island. For his family, the absence of a definitive explanation continues to leave a devastating gap between the official findings and the answers they are still seeking.
