A Day at a Youth Soccer Game Turns Tragic as Truck Strikes Players and Spectators, Killing 2

What should have been a joyful afternoon of youth soccer in Wichita, Kansas, turned into a devastating tragedy when a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and leaving 10 others injured.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, October 17, at the Stryker Sports Complex. Authorities identified the victims as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson, Kansas. The two were not related. Families had gathered at the sports complex to watch the games when the unexpected incident unfolded, leaving players, parents and spectators in shock.

According to police, the Chevrolet pickup truck had been parked near the soccer fields before it moved onto one of the playing areas and struck multiple people. Emergency calls came in at approximately 3:25 p.m. local time. As the situation unfolded, bystanders and parents rushed to help the injured before emergency personnel arrived. Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as people struggled to understand what had happened.

Ten people, including five children between the ages of 5 and 9 and five adults, were transported to hospitals with injuries. Their ages ranged from 5 to 68, and authorities said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The incident has deeply affected families throughout the community, particularly those who had come to the complex expecting an ordinary afternoon of sports and family time.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was initially taken into custody. Police later released her without filing charges while the investigation continues. Authorities are awaiting toxicology test results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle to help determine what led to the crash. Police have not established whether the incident was accidental or intentional, and the driver’s identity has not been publicly released.

Investigators have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. The woman reportedly had two of her children inside the pickup at the time, while another child was participating in a soccer game on a different field at the complex. Officials continue to gather information as they work to establish a clearer account of what happened.

In the aftermath, the Stryker Sports Complex suspended its scheduled activities, while local officials expressed condolences to the victims’ families and everyone affected. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that what should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together had ended in tragedy. The community is now left grieving the two lives lost and hoping for the recovery of those injured, as investigators continue searching for answers.
