The death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, a Black mother of four who was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, is being investigated as a homicide, a case that has raised questions and drawn national attention.

Tasia Fortune Was Found Behind an Abandoned Home

Fortune’s body was discovered hanging from a tree behind a vacant property in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in west Jackson.

The discovery immediately raised questions about how she died and whether another person was involved.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said investigators approached the case as a homicide from the beginning while awaiting a final determination from the medical examiner.

Police initially categorized Fortune’s death publicly as a death pending investigation.

Her Family Pushed Authorities for Answers

More than a month after Fortune’s death, her family was still searching for information about what happened.

Her mother, Christy Spivey, publicly expressed frustration over what she described as a lack of answers and communication about the investigation.

Spivey reached out to Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes for assistance, and her concerns were later raised during a city council meeting.

The family has maintained that Fortune was not suicidal.

Spivey has also said she believes her daughter was killed, though she does not believe her death was motivated by race.

During a Jackson City Council meeting on September 8, Chief Brackney publicly confirmed that investigators were treating Fortune’s death as a homicide unless evidence from the medical examiner indicated otherwise.

Police said they had remained in contact with Fortune’s family while continuing to gather evidence.

Why the Case Has Drawn National Attention

Terence Anderson, the father of one of Fortune’s children, was arrested shortly after her body was discovered on an unrelated charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said Anderson had been interviewed about Fortune’s death.

According to local reporting, Anderson acknowledged having an argument with Fortune but denied involvement in her death.

His arrest was not a murder charge, and authorities had not charged him in connection with Fortune’s death at the time of the initial homicide investigation announcement.

Medical Examiner Officially Rules the Death a Homicide

The investigation took a major turn after the Mississippi state medical examiner officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide.

That determination allowed Jackson police to move forward with warrants investigators had already prepared.

Police Chief Brackney said officers had interviewed nearly 15 people, collected forensic evidence and pursued multiple leads during the investigation.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed all the details surrounding how Fortune died, emphasizing that releasing information prematurely could affect the ongoing investigation.

Police Arrest Jarques Ratliff on a Murder Charge

One day after the CNN article was initially published, the case developed significantly.

Jackson police announced the arrest of 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff in connection with Fortune’s death.

Ratliff was charged with murder after the medical examiner officially determined that Fortune’s death was a homicide.

Police said they had secured two search warrants and an arrest warrant for Ratliff. Officers initially failed to locate him while executing the search warrants but later encountered him walking along a city street and took him into custody.

Chief Brackney said Ratliff had an “association” with Fortune but declined to publicly describe the nature of their relationship.

Authorities have also cautioned that the arrest does not mark the end of the investigation.

Police said additional arrests could follow.

Fortune Was a Mother of Four Trying to Rebuild Her Life
