Former UK Police Officer Found Guilty of Rape After Victim Comes Forward 22 Years Later

A former police officer in West Yorkshire, England, has been found guilty of rape more than two decades after the offense occurred, following a case that highlights the courage it can take for survivors to come forward. PC Jo Lavender, 45, was convicted by a jury at York Crown Court after the victim reported the incident in December 2024, nearly 22 years after it allegedly happened.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the offense took place in 2002, three years before Lavender joined the police force in 2005. The victim lived with the trauma for more than two decades before deciding to report what had happened. Her decision ultimately led to an investigation and criminal proceedings that resulted in Lavender’s conviction.

At the time of his suspension, Lavender was working in Leeds District. The case has drawn particular attention because the man convicted of the offense later served as a police officer, a position associated with public trust and responsibility. Authorities have emphasized that allegations of serious sexual offenses must be investigated regardless of the accused person’s profession or status.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, praised the victim’s courage in reporting the offense. She acknowledged that coming forward after so many years can be extremely difficult, particularly when the person responsible has become a police officer. She also stressed that the force would continue to pursue professional misconduct proceedings following the criminal case.

Lavender is scheduled to be sentenced on November 3, 2026. West Yorkshire Police has confirmed that further disciplinary proceedings will take place, with the aim of preventing him from working in policing in the future. The sentencing hearing will determine the criminal consequences of his conviction.

The case serves as a reminder that reporting a serious offense years later can still lead to a criminal investigation and a court verdict. For the victim, the conviction marks a significant development after years of carrying the experience in silence. While the legal process is not yet complete, the verdict represents an important step toward accountability.
