Harehills Rioter Who Helped Overturn Police Car Jailed for Two Years in UK
A man involved in the violent unrest that erupted in Harehills, Leeds, in July 2024 has been sentenced to two years in prison, becoming the 40th person convicted and sentenced in connection with the disorder. Claudiu Gangal, 25, admitted taking part in the violence that shocked the local community and led to a major police investigation.

The unrest broke out on the evening of July 18, 2024, after social workers attended a property on Luxor Street to take four children into care over safeguarding concerns. As the situation escalated, a crowd of more than 100 people gathered in the area, and police officers were called to respond. What began as a child welfare intervention soon developed into serious public disorder.
During the disturbance, a police vehicle was overturned and a double-decker bus was set on fire. Officers faced a volatile situation as violence spread through the neighborhood. The incident prompted widespread concern about public safety and led West Yorkshire Police to launch an extensive investigation to identify those involved.
Gangal, who lives on Dorset Road in Leeds, previously pleaded guilty to one count of violent disorder. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on October 15, 2026, where he received a two-year prison sentence. His case marks another significant development in the continuing legal proceedings related to the 2024 unrest.
According to West Yorkshire Police, 92 people have been arrested and 58 charged in connection with the disorder so far. The investigation has involved efforts to examine evidence and establish the roles of individuals who participated in the violence. Authorities have continued to pursue cases against those accused of serious offenses during the incident.
The sentencing brings another case to a conclusion, but the wider investigation reflects the lasting consequences of the unrest for residents, emergency services, and the community. Police have emphasized the importance of accountability as court proceedings continue for others connected to the events of that night.
