Mother Found Shot Dead Hours After Argument With Son Over 84 Rescue Cats

A Massachusetts family has been devastated by the death of 49-year-old Andria Hanafin, who was found fatally shot inside her home in Reading. Her 22-year-old son, Ryan Hanafin, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. According to investigators, the tragedy came just hours after Andria reportedly called her husband to describe another argument with their son over the large number of rescue cats she cared for at home.

Andria’s husband, Matthew Hanafin, told investigators that his wife had contacted him on the evening of October 7, 2026, explaining that she and Ryan had argued about the cats and that she wanted their son to move out. The family had reportedly been experiencing tension over the animals, as well as concerns about Ryan’s employment and future. Matthew said he had also urged his son to find a job and take steps toward becoming more independent.

Shortly after midnight on October 8, Matthew returned home from work and went to the kitchen to feed the cats. There, he discovered his wife lying on the floor with fatal gunshot injuries. Police were called, and investigators began examining the home and gathering evidence to determine what had happened. Ryan was reportedly no longer at the residence, prompting authorities to search for him.

Authorities later located Ryan in Vermont, where he was arrested on October 8 after police issued a warning that he might be armed and dangerous. Court documents also revealed that investigators found 19 firearms in his bedroom, leading to additional weapons-related charges. Prosecutors allege that he was responsible for his mother’s death, but he has pleaded not guilty and the allegations have yet to be proven in court. <Cite refs={[“turn170291search2″,”turn170291search3”]}/>

Following Andria’s death, animal welfare workers took responsibility for the cats from the home. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported that 84 cats were recovered and would receive care. Andria was remembered by people involved in animal rescue as someone with an extraordinary love for cats. One local rescue organization described her as a “cat whisperer,” reflecting the compassion she showed toward animals in need. <Cite refs={[“turn170291search4″,”turn170291search1”]}/>

The case has left the Reading community mourning a woman whose life revolved around her family and her dedication to helping animals. Andria is survived by two other children, and friends and neighbors have shared memories of her kindness. As Ryan’s legal proceedings continue, investigators and prosecutors will work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
