The Salon Was Under Water — She Was Still on the Grooming Table

October 7, 2024 — 16:24 local time

When the water came into the pet grooming salon that afternoon, it turned the place inside out. Muddy floodwater covered the tiled floor and doubled the ceiling lights. Salon chairs stood in the brown current, a metal bowl floated loose near the windows, and rain ran down the big glass panes in sheets while the street outside disappeared under the flood.

On a wet stainless-steel grooming table, above the waterline and with exactly nowhere left to go, sat the salon’s smallest customer: a tiny calico kitten, black, orange and white, soaked through, crouching low on the cold metal with her whiskers trembling.

The moment was recorded on the chest-mounted bodycam of a flood rescuer working the salon, timestamped 2024-10-07, 16:24:11. The footage is a single continuous shot, and it unfolds at the speed of trust.

Two hands, offered slowly

The video opens from the rescuer’s point of view. He is standing in the floodwater in a bright yellow waterproof emergency jacket with silver reflective strips, thick black waterproof gloves, black rescue trousers and a utility harness. Both of his hands come up slowly toward the table, palms open, at the pace of someone who knows a frightened animal reads speed as threat.

The kitten watches him come. Her large greenish eyes move between his two hands. She blinks, lowers her head for a moment, and holds her ground on the wet steel — still nervous, but not bolting. Under the grooming arm and its hanging restraint, with towels and shampoo bottles and mirrors all around her, she waits.

The lift

He supports her properly: one hand beneath her chest, the other under her hindquarters, so her whole small weight is held as she comes clear of the table — no pulling at her fur, no tug on the grooming loop. Water shakes loose from her soaked coat as she rises.

She does not struggle. Held securely in both gloved hands, she is carried across the flooded salon and lowered gently onto a stack of dry, folded towels on a higher counter. The last frames are the quietest of the fifteen: the kitten settled on the towels, paws tucked under her, blinking slowly while the floodwater laps at the furniture legs below.

A salon that will need drying out

By evening, the salon’s staff were salvaging bottles, brushes and equipment from the water, and the floor remained a shallow, muddy lake. The kitten’s afternoon ended considerably better than the salon’s: dry towels, solid ground under her paws, and a pair of hands that took fifteen unhurried seconds to earn her trust.
