Jewish Women Allegedly Punched in Suspected Hate Crime Attacks in London — Man, 33, Arrested

A disturbing incident in east London has sparked concern after at least three Jewish women were reportedly assaulted in the Clapton Common area of Hackney on October 19, 2026. One of the women was pushing a baby in a stroller when she was allegedly attacked. The Metropolitan Police are treating the incidents as suspected antisemitic hate crimes, and a 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the allegations.

According to reports, one of the women contacted Shomrim, a volunteer Jewish community security organization, after allegedly being punched in the face. Volunteers reportedly arrived within approximately 30 seconds and witnessed another woman being assaulted. They detained the suspect and alerted police, who arrived at around 1:40 p.m. Authorities subsequently confirmed that at least three women had reported being assaulted in the area.

The women are believed to have suffered minor injuries, although the incidents have caused considerable concern among members of the local Jewish community. Reports indicate that the women may have been targeted because of their Jewish identity. Police are investigating this possibility as part of their hate crime inquiry, but the allegations remain under investigation and have not been established in court.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault. Police later arrested him again in connection with a separate incident involving a woman believed to be known to him in Islington on October 16. In that case, he was suspected of causing grievous bodily harm. He remained in police custody as investigators continued examining both matters.

Chief Inspector Erica Crawshaw of the Metropolitan Police described the incident as alarming and distressing. She thanked Shomrim volunteers for detaining the suspect before officers arrived and said additional patrols had been introduced in the area. Police are also communicating with community leaders to reassure residents and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

Authorities have appealed to potential witnesses and anyone who believes they may have been assaulted to contact the police. The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to establish the full circumstances of the incidents and determine whether other victims may have been affected.
