Texas Couple Charged After 17-Year-Old Girl Is Killed in Suspected Random Highway Shooting
A 17-year-old high school student was on her way to meet friends at the zoo when her life was tragically cut short in a seemingly random highway shooting in Missouri. Now, a Texas couple is facing serious charges as investigators work to uncover what led to the deadly incident.

Alyssa Wilson was driving along Interstate 170 in Overland, near St. Louis, on October 14, 2026, when she was struck by a gunshot, according to authorities. The teenager had been heading to the St. Louis Zoo to meet friends when the shooting occurred. Emergency responders found her suffering from a gunshot wound after receiving a report of a vehicle crash. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Investigators say surveillance footage showed a white SUV pulled over along the highway. According to authorities, Willie Herndon, 42, allegedly stepped out of the vehicle near an exit before a gunshot was heard. He then reportedly returned to the SUV, which drove away. Investigators believe Wilson was passing the area at the time she was shot.
The investigation led authorities to Willie Herndon and his wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, both from Arlington, Texas. Police say the couple left Missouri after the shooting. Investigators used license plate reader technology to track their vehicle to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. After the pair were arrested, authorities reportedly recovered evidence connected to the case from their hotel room.
Both defendants face charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Wilson’s death. Taiya Herndon is also accused of hindering prosecution for allegedly helping her husband evade authorities. Prosecutors have described the shooting as apparently random, and investigators are continuing to examine whether it may be connected to other incidents.
Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School and was looking forward to graduation and college. Her father described her as excited about her future, with only about 60 days remaining before her 18th birthday. Her death has left her family and school community grieving a young life filled with promise. The defendants remain accused, and the charges will be addressed through the legal process.
