4-Year-Old Boy Mauled to Death by Dog Just Days After Starting Preschool as Deputies Are Forced to Stop Attack

A four-year-old Virginia boy has died after being attacked by a dog just days after beginning preschool, leaving his family devastated. Garcia Welch was pronounced dead on October 18, 2026, following the attack in Louisa County, authorities said.

According to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received an emergency call at approximately 4:42 p.m. reporting that a dog was attacking a young child in the 1500 block of Jefferson Highway. When officers arrived, they found Garcia suffering from serious injuries while the animal continued attacking him.

Deputies said they were forced to put the dog down to stop the ongoing attack. The child was then rushed by emergency medical personnel to a designated landing zone for air transport to a hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. Authorities identified the dog as an American Bully.

Investigators have not yet disclosed who owned the dog, whether Garcia was familiar with the animal or what triggered the attack. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain under investigation, and officials said additional information would be released when appropriate.

Garcia had recently started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. A fundraising campaign established to help his family cover funeral expenses described him as a young boy with a bright future ahead of him. He is survived by his mother and older brother.

The heartbreaking incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences from people who knew the child. As the investigation continues, his family is left grieving a devastating loss that came just as he was beginning a new chapter of his young life.
