Tiny Tabby Kitten Rescued From Pastry Counter of Flooded Coffee Shop

A tiny tabby kitten was rescued from the top of a glass pastry display counter inside a flooded coffee shop on the morning of October 27, after severe rainfall left the café floor covered in muddy brown water.

Bodycam footage recorded by the rescuer shows the small grey, black and white kitten crouched on the wet glass counter, its fur soaked and spiky, its paws planted on the slick surface as it watched the rescuer approach. Around it, chairs lay overturned in the floodwater, tables stood in several inches of muddy water, and rain streamed down the shop’s large front windows.

The rescuer, wearing a tan waterproof urban rescue jacket with reflective strips and thick black gloves, waded slowly through the water and extended both hands toward the kitten. The kitten blinked, lowered its body slightly and let out a faint meow, but did not try to flee.

Moving carefully so as not to startle it, the rescuer slid one hand beneath the kitten’s chest and the other under its hindquarters, lifting it gently from the glass. Droplets of water fell from its drenched fur as it was raised and settled securely against the rescuer’s jacket, where it gradually began to relax.

The warm lights of the café were still glowing above the display case of croissants and muffins as the rescuer turned toward a raised interior doorway, carrying the kitten clear of the rising water.

The kitten appeared frightened but unharmed and was carried to dry ground inside the building, where it could be warmed, dried and checked over.
