Veterinarian Left Multiple Suicide Notes Before Killing His Parents, Son and Girlfriend in Shocking Murder-Suicide, Police Say
A veterinarian in Illinois allegedly shot and killed his elderly parents, his 22-year-old son and his longtime girlfriend before taking his own life, leaving behind multiple suicide notes that investigators are now examining. The shocking killings unfolded inside a suburban Chicago home, leaving an entire community searching for answers.

Bryan Schmidt, 51, was identified as the man responsible for the suspected murder-suicide in Mundelein, Illinois. The victims were his parents, Rebecca Schmidt, 77, and James Schmidt, 80; his son, Maclaine Schmidt, 22; and his girlfriend, Nicole Heiser, 37, according to reports. Authorities said the victims were discovered in different rooms throughout the family home.
Investigators believe the shootings occurred sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Neighbors reportedly heard gunfire but initially mistook the sounds for firecrackers being set off ahead of a Chicago Bears football game. The tragedy remained undiscovered until late that night, when Schmidt’s sister, Kimberly, who lives in California, contacted authorities to request a welfare check after becoming concerned that she had not heard from her parents.

Police discovered all five people dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities also reported finding multiple suicide notes left by Bryan Schmidt at the scene and inside his vehicle. Investigators have not disclosed the contents of the notes and have not established a motive for the killings.
Schmidt managed the family-run Northern Illinois Cat Clinic in Libertyville, which has since closed, according to reports. Neighbors described the family as quiet and expressed shock that such a violent incident could occur in their community. Authorities said the case appeared to be an isolated incident and noted that police had not previously been called to the residence.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review evidence and work to establish what led to the deaths. The tragedy has left relatives and community members grieving the loss of four victims whose lives were cut short in a single devastating incident.
