Mother and 7-Year-Old Daughter Kidnapped and Strapped with Fake Dynamite as Gang Forces Her to Rob a Bank
In November 2000, Michelle Renee’s life changed forever when three masked men broke into her home in San Diego County, California, and took her and her 7-year-old daughter, Breea, hostage. The gang threatened to kill them unless Michelle, a bank manager, agreed to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bank where she worked.

The intruders restrained Michelle and her daughter with duct tape and kept them captive overnight. They threatened to use what appeared to be dynamite strapped to their bodies, warning that any attempt to escape or seek help could cost them their lives. Michelle’s roommate was also held hostage during the ordeal.
The following morning, the gang forced Michelle to drive to her workplace and take approximately $360,000 from the bank vault. With her daughter’s life hanging in the balance, she followed their instructions before rushing home, terrified of what she might find. Thankfully, Breea was still alive, hiding in a closet where the kidnappers had left her.
After reaching safety, Michelle contacted police and shared what she remembered about the men. One crucial detail helped investigators: she recognized the ringleader as someone who had recently visited her bank and left behind a business card. That lead helped authorities identify Christopher Butler and investigate the people involved in the crime.
Investigators later discovered that the supposed explosives were fake, made to look like dynamite as part of the gang’s intimidation tactics. Butler and other men involved in the kidnapping and robbery were convicted and received lengthy prison sentences. The case, however, left Michelle and Breea facing years of emotional recovery and trauma.
Today, Michelle has turned her experience into a mission to help others heal. She has written books about the ordeal, including Held Hostage and Nine Days, and became a trauma-healing practitioner. She says that although she cannot change the past, she hopes to use her experience to help other people move forward.
What began as a terrifying hostage ordeal became a story of survival, courage, and the long journey toward healing. Michelle’s determination to protect her daughter helped them survive one of the most frightening experiences of their lives.
