The Smallest Patient in the Flooded Clinic

Bodycam footage recorded on 2024-10-09 at 08:57:22 shows a flood responder wading into a veterinary clinic where the reception floor has disappeared under muddy water — and finding its smallest patient waiting on top of a pet carrier.

The waiting chairs stood in brown water. Papers and packaging drifted across the reception area, and rain streamed down the glass entrance doors. Stacked against the curved reception counter was a pile of plastic pet carriers, and on top of the highest one sat a tiny calico kitten, her black, orange and white fur soaked and clumped together, her wide eyes fixed nervously on the approaching rescuer.

She had chosen the driest spot in the building. It was not dry at all.

Two hands, offered slowly

The footage, recorded from the rescuer’s chest-mounted camera, shows him kneeling in the floodwater in a dark green waterproof emergency-response jacket, black gloves and a utility harness. He does not reach straight for the kitten. First, both hands rise slowly into frame and simply wait, open, while the kitten looks from one hand to the other.

She answers with a faint meow.

Only then does he move in — one hand sliding gently beneath her chest, the other supporting her hindquarters — and lift her clear of the carrier, water dripping from her wet fur as she comes up into both hands without a struggle.

A dry towel on the counter

The camera follows in one continuous shot as he carries her the short distance to the elevated reception counter, above the flood line, where a dry towel is waiting. He sets her down softly into the fabric, steadies her for a moment with both hands, and lets go.

The kitten blinks, lowers herself into the towel, and settles.

Behind her, the clinic’s shelves of pet-care products and the animal posters on the wall stand untouched above the water — a reminder of what this room is supposed to be. For one small patient, at least, it briefly became that place again: somewhere safe, somewhere dry, somewhere she would be looked after.

The floodwater was still rising outside the glass doors. Inside, on a towel on the counter, the smallest patient in the clinic was finally out of it.
