Illinois Woman Accused of Deliberately Crashing Into Semi-Truck in Attempt to Kill Herself and Family — Mother Dies in Horrific Collision

An Illinois woman has been arrested and charged with murder after investigators alleged that she deliberately steered her vehicle into the path of an oncoming semi-truck, causing a devastating head-on collision that killed her elderly mother and injured other occupants. Authorities say the woman allegedly intended to end the lives of everyone inside her vehicle, turning what initially appeared to be a tragic traffic accident into a criminal investigation.

Jamie L. Rhode, 47, of Griggsville, Illinois, was taken into custody on October 20, 2026, following a months-long investigation into the deadly crash. According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, the collision occurred on July 24 along U.S. Highway 54 near Atlas Hill, approximately one mile east of Atlas.

The crash was reported at approximately 7:54 p.m. Deputies responding to the scene discovered that a Toyota RAV4 had collided head-on with a semi-tractor-trailer. The impact left the vehicle’s occupants injured and prompted an emergency response involving local law enforcement, firefighters and medical personnel.

Among those inside the Toyota was Rhode’s 73-year-old mother, Cherie K. Wells, of Pittsfield, Illinois. Wells sustained critical injuries and was transported for medical treatment. Despite efforts to save her, she later died at a hospital in St. Louis County, Missouri.

Rhode and her teenage son also suffered injuries in the collision and were taken to hospitals for treatment. The driver of the semi-truck was not reported to have been seriously injured in some initial accounts, although other reports indicated that he received medical attention following the crash.

Initially, the collision required investigators to determine how the two vehicles had ended up on a direct collision course. However, as deputies examined the circumstances and gathered evidence, they began to suspect that the crash had not been accidental.

According to Pike County Sheriff David Greenwood, the investigation ultimately led authorities to conclude that Rhode had intentionally steered her vehicle across the center line and into the path of the approaching semi-truck. Investigators allege that her actions were intended to kill everyone traveling in her vehicle.

The sheriff’s department described the incident as an intentional act rather than an ordinary roadway accident. Authorities have not publicly disclosed all the evidence supporting that conclusion, and the allegations will be examined through the criminal justice process.

Reports also revealed a disturbing explanation allegedly offered by Rhode regarding her state of mind before the collision. According to the sheriff’s account cited by People, she was reportedly afraid of dying alone. Investigators believe this fear may have contributed to the alleged decision to cause the crash, although the full circumstances surrounding her actions remain under investigation.

The fact that Rhode’s mother was among the passengers has added another heartbreaking dimension to the case. Wells was 73 years old when she died, and authorities have not fully explained the circumstances surrounding her presence in the vehicle that evening. Reports indicate that Rhode had picked up her mother from a nursing home shortly before the crash.

Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued charging Rhode with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. She was arrested on October 20 and booked into the Pike County Jail.

The charges reflect investigators’ allegations that the collision was deliberately caused and that multiple people inside the vehicle were targeted. The attempted murder charge relates to an alleged victim who survived the incident, while the murder charges stem from the fatal consequences of the crash.

Rhode was expected to appear in court on October 23, 2026. The proceedings will provide an opportunity for the allegations and evidence to be addressed before a judge. At the time of the latest reports, authorities had not released a complete account of the alleged motive or all the evidence gathered during the investigation.

The case has left serious questions about how a family car journey ended in a fatal collision with a commercial truck. What initially appeared to be a devastating accident has now become a homicide case, with prosecutors expected to examine whether the evidence supports the allegations of deliberate intent.

For Wells’ loved ones, the loss of a 73-year-old family member has brought profound grief. Rhode’s surviving son must also contend with the physical and emotional consequences of a crash that investigators believe may have been intentional.

As the legal process moves forward, authorities will continue working to establish the full sequence of events and determine responsibility for the fatal collision. Rhode remains accused of serious crimes and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
