Autopsy Reveals How New Jersey Mother Brooke Hanlon Died — Nearly Five Months After Her Brutal Killing, Her Murder Remains Unsolved

Nearly five months after 35-year-old psychotherapist Brooke Hanlon was found dead inside her New Jersey home, a newly released autopsy report has provided further details about the fatal attack. However, despite the medical examiner’s findings, investigators have yet to announce an arrest, leaving her family, friends and the community still searching for answers in a case that remains unsolved.

Hanlon, a mother to a young daughter, was discovered inside her home in Chester Township, New Jersey, on June 6, 2026. Authorities later confirmed that she died from multiple sharp-force injuries and ruled her death a homicide. The recently released report offers additional information about her injuries, although substantial portions of the document remain redacted as the investigation continues.

According to reports, emergency responders were dispatched to Hanlon’s residence on Pottersville Road shortly after 4:30 p.m. on June 6 following a call reporting a woman in cardiac or respiratory arrest. Dispatch communications indicated that the caller had discovered a serious injury and was attempting to help her while seeking emergency assistance.

The caller was identified as Hanlon’s husband, James “Conor” Hanlon, who reportedly found her unresponsive and bleeding inside their home. In the 911 recording, he sounded distressed as he told the dispatcher that he had found his wife and needed instructions on performing CPR.

Despite the emergency response, Hanlon was pronounced dead at the scene. What initially appeared to be a medical emergency soon became a homicide investigation after authorities examined her injuries.

Autopsy Reveals Fatal Injuries

The autopsy was performed on June 7 by Morris County Medical Examiner Dr. Di Wang, one day after Hanlon’s death. The report, which was certified on September 20 and released publicly in October, confirmed that the cause of death was “sharp force injuries” and classified the manner of death as homicide.

The document contains eight numbered categories describing injuries, but the categories do not necessarily correspond to eight individual wounds. Many of the specific descriptions, including details about the number, location, measurements and direction of the injuries, have been withheld from the public.

Some portions of the report refer to multiple wounds and document blood collected in certain areas of the body. However, because key anatomical details have been redacted, the complete extent and pattern of Hanlon’s injuries cannot be determined from the publicly available document alone.

The report also indicates that a blood specimen was collected for toxicology testing, with those findings to be documented separately.

Although the autopsy confirms that Hanlon suffered fatal injuries inflicted by a sharp object, it does not identify who attacked her or explain why the killing occurred. Authorities have not publicly established a motive or disclosed a complete account of the events leading to her death.

Nearly Five Months Later, No Arrests Announced

The release of the autopsy report has renewed attention on a case that has generated intense concern because of the limited information authorities have made public.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Chester Township Police Department and Morris County Sheriff’s Office have been involved in the investigation. Officials have repeatedly declined to release extensive details, explaining that the case remains active and that withholding certain information is necessary to protect the investigation.

As of the latest reports published in October 2026, authorities had not announced any arrests or publicly identified a person of interest in connection with Hanlon’s death.

Investigators have also not publicly confirmed whether a murder weapon was recovered. The limited information available has left friends and members of the community frustrated by the lack of answers after months of investigation.

Authorities have appealed to the public for information about Hanlon’s death or suspicious activity in the area surrounding her home. A reward of up to $1,000 has reportedly been offered for information that could lead to an arrest.

A Young Mother Remembered by Her Loved Ones

Beyond the investigation, Hanlon’s death has left a devastating void in the lives of her family and friends. She was 35 years old and had recently welcomed her daughter, Avery, with her husband.

Hanlon worked as a psychotherapist, specializing in helping children and families. Those who knew her remembered her for her compassion, empathy, generosity and dedication to supporting others through difficult periods in their lives.

Her obituary described her as a devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend whose kindness had a lasting impact on the people around her.

Friends have also spoken publicly about their grief and confusion over the circumstances of her death. Jennifer Payne, a friend from graduate school and former roommate, described the lack of progress and information as heartbreaking and frustrating.

For those who knew Hanlon, the unanswered questions surrounding her killing have compounded the pain of losing someone they loved. Her daughter will grow up without her mother, while family members continue to wait for investigators to establish what happened inside the home that afternoon.

Her Husband Has Denied Involvement

Hanlon’s husband was the person who reportedly discovered her body and called emergency services. In subsequent comments to the media, he expressed grief over his wife’s death and denied any involvement in the killing.

He has not been charged with a crime, and authorities have not publicly named him as a suspect. His role as the person who discovered Hanlon’s body does not, by itself, establish any wrongdoing.

Investigators have not disclosed sufficient information to publicly establish who was responsible for the homicide. The identity of the perpetrator, the motive and the sequence of events leading to Hanlon’s death remain unresolved.

Her family has expressed confidence in law enforcement’s efforts to investigate the case and determine who was responsible.

As the investigation continues, the autopsy provides a clearer medical conclusion about how Hanlon died, but it does not resolve the central mystery surrounding her killing. Nearly five months after her death, loved ones are still waiting for answers and hoping that someone with information will come forward.
