Care Worker Is Found Stabbed in Crashed Car While Trying to Reach Hospital
A 47-year-old care worker has died after allegedly being attacked while on duty in South Wales, in a heartbreaking case that has left her family, colleagues and local community devastated. Eleanor Barnfield reportedly managed to call emergency services before attempting to drive herself to hospital, but her journey ended when her car crashed into a wall.

Clifford Foster, 61, from Bridgend, has now been charged with her murder, according to South Wales Police. He is expected to appear before Newport Magistrates’ Court as the investigation continues.
A Desperate Attempt to Reach Medical Help
The incident reportedly happened at around 11:35 a.m. on October 19, while Eleanor was working at a retirement housing complex in Bridgend.
According to reports, Eleanor called 999 after allegedly being attacked. When the call was interrupted, she reportedly attempted to drive herself to hospital. The emergency control room tried to call her back but was unable to reach her.
She managed to travel approximately 300 yards before losing control of the situation and crashing into a wall.
Police were called to the collision on Coity Road shortly before 12:45 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered that Eleanor had sustained injuries unrelated to the crash. Authorities later confirmed that she had suffered puncture wounds.
Despite receiving emergency medical treatment, Eleanor died in hospital.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain under investigation, and police have urged the public not to speculate while court proceedings are active.
A Family Remembers a Loving Mother
Following Eleanor’s death, her family released an emotional tribute describing her as a kind, loving and brave woman who meant everything to them.
They said she had been their rock and would be deeply missed by her devoted family and friends.
Eleanor was a mother, and her death has left her loved ones facing an unimaginable loss. Those who knew her have also spoken about her caring nature and the commitment she brought to her work.
For her family, the tragedy is not simply a criminal investigation. It is the sudden loss of someone whose love and support were central to their lives.
Colleagues Pay Tribute to a Dedicated Care Worker
Eleanor worked for Valleys to Coast, where colleagues remembered her as a valued member of the organisation who made an important contribution to the communities it served.
Jo Oak, the organisation’s chief executive, said the team was devastated by the death of their colleague. She expressed sympathy for Eleanor’s family and friends, adding that Eleanor would be remembered with warmth and affection.
Her work involved supporting others, making the circumstances surrounding her death especially distressing for those who knew her professionally.
The retirement housing complex where she was reportedly working was the subject of a significant police operation following the incident. Residents were evacuated while officers carried out their investigation.
Police Warn Against Speculation
South Wales Police confirmed that the case was not being investigated as a domestic incident. Senior investigating officer Claire Lamerton said specialist officers were supporting Eleanor’s loved ones during this difficult time.
Police have also appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators to come forward.
Meanwhile, the Welsh Ambulance Service addressed online rumours suggesting there had been a delay in responding. The service said an advanced high-acuity response unit arrived seven minutes after the initial call about the road collision, followed by two additional ambulances.
Officials described claims circulating on social media about a delayed ambulance response as misleading and urged people not to spread unverified information.
Murder Charge as Investigation Continues
Foster has been charged with murder following his arrest. The charge is an allegation, and the case will now proceed through the criminal justice system.
Authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, and further details may emerge as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
For now, Eleanor’s family and colleagues are remembering a woman they describe as deeply caring, brave and devoted to those around her. Her death has sent shockwaves through the local community, while loved ones face the painful task of coming to terms with a loss they say will never truly be filled.
