Florida Woman Accused of Setting Man on Fire After Argument, Leaving Him With Burns Over 80% of His Body

A 45-year-old Florida woman has been arrested after allegedly setting a man on fire following an argument in northwest Miami-Dade, leaving him with severe burns across at least 80% of his body, authorities said.

According to investigators, Tanisha Shelton and 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis had a heated dispute earlier on Saturday, October 24. Shelton allegedly threatened to return with someone to assault him before leaving the area.

Police said Shelton later returned carrying a bucket containing a bag of liquid accelerant. She allegedly asked a witness to borrow a lighter before pouring the substance over Mathis and setting him on fire.

Emergency crews responded near Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue at around 6 p.m. They found Mathis unconscious and badly burned. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where doctors reportedly determined he had second- and third-degree burns covering at least 80% of his body.

Authorities described Mathis’s condition as extremely critical and said he was not expected to survive. His subsequent medical outcome has not been confirmed in the available reports.

Witnesses reportedly tried to stop Shelton from fleeing, with one person using pepper spray. Deputies later located and arrested her nearby.

Shelton faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and arson causing great bodily harm. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
