Seconds From the Drain, a Tiny Hedgehog Gets a Second Chance in the Rain

Caught on bodycam during a nighttime downpour, a tiny wet hedgehog is seen crouched among soaked leaves beside a roadside storm drain, dangerously close to fast moving runoff.

As cars pass on the wet highway behind him, rainwater rushes through the metal grate just inches away. The hedgehog stays low, blinking and trembling, with nowhere safe to go.

Then a rescuer in a bright orange high visibility jacket crouches down. Moving slowly, one gloved hand is placed between the hedgehog and the water, while the other approaches carefully from the dry side.

With both hands, the rescuer gently scoops the hedgehog up from underneath, taking care not to press on its spines. Muddy droplets fall as the little animal is lifted clear of the drain.

In the final moments, the rescuer turns toward the sheltered grassy area behind the guardrail, holding the hedgehog securely in both gloves, while the rain soaked road remains behind them.

It was a small rescue, but for one tiny life on a stormy night, it meant everything.
