Indiana Man Accused of Trying to Kidnap Teen Girl at Gunpoint — Her Family Rushed In to Stop Him
A teenage girl was allegedly grabbed and threatened at gunpoint outside her own home by a stranger who tried to force her into his vehicle. The terrifying encounter in southern Indiana came to an end when the girl screamed for help, alerting family members who rushed outside and restrained the suspect until police arrived.

Jeffrey Allen Mauck, 53, of Borden, Indiana, was arrested on October 23 following the alleged attempted abduction in Washington County. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to a residence on North Naugle Road in Salem at approximately 4:30 p.m. after receiving a report that a man armed with a gun was trying to abduct a juvenile girl.
Investigators allege that Mauck approached the girl while she was outside her home and attempted to force her into his vehicle. According to the sheriff’s office, the girl told authorities that he grabbed her and threatened her with a firearm. She reportedly fought to break free and screamed, drawing the attention of relatives inside the home.
The girl’s family members quickly intervened and managed to detain Mauck before law enforcement arrived. Their actions prevented the alleged abduction from progressing further. Sheriff Brent Miller praised the family’s quick response, saying authorities were grateful the girl was able to escape and that relatives acted swiftly to protect her.
When deputies arrived, they reportedly recovered a revolver, ammunition, handcuffs and two folding knives. Authorities have not publicly clarified where each item was found or whether every item was directly connected to the alleged attempted kidnapping. Mauck was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment before being booked into the Washington County Detention Center.
Mauck faces charges including attempted kidnapping while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement, aggravated battery, intimidation and pointing a firearm. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. According to local reports, a judge set his cash bail at $2 million following his initial court appearance on October 26.
The case has shocked residents in the Salem area, where neighbors expressed concern for the young victim and her family. A local resident told WLKY that she was heartbroken for the girl and could not imagine the trauma she might be experiencing after the encounter.
Authorities have not publicly released the girl’s exact age or identity. The sheriff’s department said the case was forwarded to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office for further proceedings. Mauck is presumed innocent unless and until the charges are proven in court.
