Missouri Mom Accused of Abandoning 4-Year-Old Daughter at Truck Stop, Then Denying She Had a Child
A Missouri mother is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly abandoning her 4-year-old daughter in a truck stop parking lot in the middle of the night, then telling police that she did not have a daughter, according to court documents. The disturbing case has raised concerns about the safety of young children after investigators also uncovered allegations involving the woman’s two other children, who were reportedly traveling with her when she left the little girl behind.

Authorities identified the woman as Kayla Marie Christensen. According to a criminal complaint filed in Newton County, the investigation began shortly before 3 a.m. on October 23, 2026, when officers with the Neosho Police Department responded to reports of a young child found alone in the parking lot of a Love’s Travel Stop in Neosho, Missouri. The girl was just 4 years old and had allegedly been left there without an adult to care for her. Investigators later alleged that Christensen intentionally abandoned the child and drove away without intending to return.
The circumstances became even more troubling when officers reportedly tracked down Christensen and questioned her about the missing girl. According to the affidavit, she allegedly claimed that her only children were her two sons, denying that she had a daughter. Prosecutors cited the alleged denial, along with the circumstances in which the child was left behind, as evidence supporting the abandonment charge. The young girl was identified as “JV1” in the court documents to protect her identity.
Two Other Children Were Allegedly Put at Risk
Investigators also raised concerns about the safety of Christensen’s two other young children, both boys, who were reportedly inside her vehicle when she drove away from the truck stop. According to the complaint, neither child was properly secured in an appropriate car seat, and both were allegedly in close proximity to suspected drug paraphernalia, including syringes.
Police alleged that transporting the children under these circumstances created a substantial risk of injury to them and potentially to other motorists and members of the public. These allegations form part of the broader criminal case against Christensen, which includes charges related to child endangerment.
The investigation reportedly uncovered another troubling incident after the alleged abandonment. According to a report from Missouri radio station KZRG, Christensen allegedly left her two sons inside her vehicle while she went into a casino in Wyandotte, Kansas. Authorities have not publicly provided a complete account of that incident, and the allegations remain subject to further legal proceedings.
Mother Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Court records indicate that Christensen was arrested on October 23. According to Law&Crime, she faces one count of first-degree child abandonment and two counts of first-degree child endangerment. The charges reflect prosecutors’ allegations concerning the circumstances in which the 4-year-old was left alone and the risks allegedly posed to the other children.
The case has drawn attention not only because of the alleged abandonment but also because of the children’s reported exposure to potentially dangerous conditions. Young children depend entirely on adults to provide appropriate supervision, transportation and protection. Leaving a preschool-aged child alone in a public parking lot before dawn can expose that child to serious risks, particularly when the child has no reliable way to contact a caregiver or find safety independently.
Employees at the Love’s Travel Stop reportedly helped keep the little girl calm and safe until officers arrived. Their response ensured that the child was not left entirely without assistance while police worked to establish what had happened and identify the person responsible for her care.
Questions Remain as the Case Moves Forward
Although the criminal allegations have been outlined in court documents, several questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not released a complete explanation of what allegedly led Christensen to leave her daughter at the truck stop or provided extensive details about the family’s circumstances before the incident.
The case also highlights the importance of ensuring that children are properly supervised and safely secured while traveling. Investigators will now have to establish the facts supporting each charge through the legal process, while the children’s welfare remains a central concern.
Christensen’s arrest does not mean she has been convicted, and the allegations against her must be proven in court. Nevertheless, the circumstances described in the affidavit have prompted serious concerns about the safety of all three children.
For now, the 4-year-old’s discovery alone in a truck stop parking lot remains the central event in a case that has left many wondering how such a young child allegedly came to be left behind. As the proceedings continue, authorities will work to clarify the circumstances and determine the legal consequences of the alleged actions.
