A Tiny Tarsier, A Gentle Pouch, And A Safe Place In The Rain

BOHOL, PHILIPPINES

During heavy rain in a tropical forest in Bohol, a tiny tarsier was found clinging to a wet branch covered in moss, displaced from its shelter and exposed to the storm.

The animal, with extremely large round eyes, delicate fingers, brown fur, and a long thin tail, held tightly to the branch while rain dripped from the leaves around it. A rescuer wearing a black waterproof tropical wildlife rescue jacket approached slowly, keeping movements calm and low to avoid further stress.

Instead of grabbing the frightened animal, the rescuer offered a soft cream fabric pouch and held it steady beneath the branch. The tarsier studied the pouch, tested the fabric with its fingers, and then cautiously climbed down and stepped inside.

The rescuer gently lowered the pouch and placed it inside a small gray ventilated wildlife transport crate, where the tarsier remained calmly perched on the soft fabric. The animal was dry, sheltered, and safe from the rain while it awaited further care.

Tarsiers are among the smallest primates in the world, and they are highly sensitive to stress, noise, and sudden handling. Wildlife rescuers say slow and gentle approaches are essential, because a frightened tarsier can easily injure itself if it panics.

In this case, patience made all the difference. A frightened animal on a slippery branch became a calm animal in a safe pouch, ready for the care it needed.
